Activating your WNEC Internet E-mail Account
These instructions explain how to use your Western New England College Internet E-mail account for the first time. They assume you have access to a computer connected to the World Wide Web. If you do not have your own computer with an Internet connection, you can perform these steps from any computer in Churchill Lab or D’Amour Library.
Step 1 Verify your username.
Your username is comprised of the first letter of your first name, followed by at most 7 letters of your last name, all in lowercase letters. (Note that usernames can never be longer than 8 characters). For example, John Smith’s username would be ‘jsmith’ and Christine Blackwell’s username would be ‘cblackwe.’
It’s fairly common to have more than one person with the same first initial and last name. To solve this problem, the system that creates the accounts adds one of the digits 0 through 9 to the end of a username to make it unique.
For example:
If John Smith already has the username ‘jsmith,’ Jane Smith and Joe Smith might get the usernames ‘jsmith0’ and ‘jsmith1.’
Charles Blackwell might get the username ‘cblackw0’ if Christine Blackwell already has ‘cblackwe.’
Note in all cases that a username is never longer than 8 characters even when a digit has been added to the end.
You can visit an interactive web page to check your username. Go to http://oit.wnec.edu/phone. Type in your name and click on Search. Refer to Picture below for an Example.

Your name will be listed on the left, your username in the middle and your email address on the right. Your email address is simply your username followed by ‘@wnec.edu.’ People sometimes get the terms ‘username’ and ‘e-mail address’ confused. You enter your username to login to a mail server to read and send your mail.
If this program does not display your correct record, you should proceed to step 2 anyway using your best guess at what your username should be given the rules described above. There is a slight chance that the username search program has not been updated since your account was created.
Step 2 Changing your Password.
Your initial password is your Social Security Number (or your Student ID Number) with no dashes. This initial password gives you the ability to change your password. You cannot access your e-mail with your Social Security Number.
To change your password, go to https://mail.wnec.edu/cgi-bin/cypr.cgi.
Notes About New Passwords:
Better security encryption methods for insuring password protection are being implemented. Improved security will help prevent access by ‘hackers’ to the college’s servers. Additionally, these methodologies are essential in providing a ‘single’ password for accessing all college servers in the future.
Hints for Creating New Passwords:
New passwords must be at least 6 characters in length with a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters intermixed with at least one digit or symbol within the letters (ex.:Xgh7Qz). See below for more examples. If your password is more than 6 characters in length, the password can be a combination of capital and lowercase letters that do not spell a word (ex.: SzV1KeR). The characters MUST NOT spell a word likely to appear in a dictionary. The digit(s), if placed correctly, can change a dictionary word to an accepted password.
Messages that one might see for inappropriate password selections include:
* Password too much like a dictionary word meaning: some or all of the characters may be found in a dictionary word.
* Password too simple: most likely you have entered too few characters.
Notes About Passwords:
Better security encryption methods for insuring password protection are being implemented.
Your password will expire every 63 days (9 weeks).
This improved security will help prevent access by 'hackers' to the college's servers. Additionally, these methodologies are essential in providing a 'single' password for accessing all college servers in the future.
Password Selections: Many people choose common words to be a password.
Examples of acceptable passwords:
sNo925Y
Zq4G%@
Kni8ghts
phot0grap
Perhaps think of a phrase:
McaHN00 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2000; pick the first characters of each word and insert 2 digits
DO NOT USE THESE EXAMPLES!
Step 3-Use ‘Web-Mail’ to try your account:
Visit http://oit.wnec.edu/webmail. The Web-Mail program is just one way you can read and send e-mail and is a good way to test your account for the first time. Enter your username and password, and click the "Login to Web-Mail" button. Refer to Picture below for an Example.
** Web-Mail is our new web-based email program. It is under going changes to create new features and make general improvements.

After you’ve logged in successfully, you’ll know your e-mail account is working properly. You can use Web-Mail to send messages to others and to read messages others have sent to you. Remember that your e-mail address is your username@wnec.edu.
Forwarding to Another Email Address:
All WNEC Students, Faculty and Staff currently get email accounts. Mail sent to your account is placed in your incoming mailbox whether you activate the account or not (until the mailbox fills). If your mailbox is full, or if your account has been removed, the sender gets a reply stating that the message could not be delivered. The sender has no reliable way of knowing if your account is active, or if you are actually reading your WNEC email.
Occasionally, faculty, staff, or classmates, choose to distribute information via email with the assumption that everyone will actually read it. Individuals who do not read mail sent to their WNEC account may potentially miss information they might consider important.
For many people, it is inconvenient to maintain a WNEC email account in addition to their private mail service. One way to deal with this is to set up your WNEC account so that it forwards future incoming mail to your private email address. Mail that is already in your mailbox will not be forwarded. Future incoming mail can be forwarded using the experimental Forwardeer web page:
IF YOU WANT TO HAVE ALL YOUR FUTURE INCOMING WNEC EMAIL FORWARDED TO ANOTHER EMAIL ADDRESS, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS AT:
https://mail.wnec.edu/x-bin/vacationeer/forwardeer
Auto Reply:
For people who use their WNEC email accounts and will not be checking their mail for an extended period of time, the experimental Vacationeer service is in place. This is most useful if you will be on vacation, out of the office, or unable to check your email for an extended period of time.
Just before you leave, set up a customizable automatic reply message. While you're away, incoming mail is stored in your mailbox (unless it is full), and a copy of your customized reply message is returned to the sender, possibly informing them of when you will return. When you return, you need to remember to turn off the automatic reply feature.
