Western New England College presented in February a staged
reading of "Words Born in Darkness". Students, staff and faculty
of the College participated in the readings. The event was held in conjunction
with this year's lecture day theme: "The Many Faces of Evil: Legacies
and Lessons." The reading, directed by Hillary Haft Bucs, senior drama
lecturer, focused on the writings of both children and adults who have been
victims of the Holocaust and other forms of genocide and oppression - including
poetry written by children imprisoned in the Theresienstadt Concentration
Camp in Czechoslovakia during World War II, a dramatic reading, with slides
and music, of the children's book "Brundibar" by Tony Kushner
and Maurice Sendak, and a selection of poems and prose written by victims
of oppression around the world, both past and present, from the Armenian
genocide to domestic violence. The staged reading is part of the "Reflections
on the Holocaust" series sponsored by the Cooperating Colleges of Greater
Springfield.
