(Counts as one point, seven point system used in match.) WNEC SETS SIGHTS ON SECOND STRAIGHT GNAC TOURNAMENT TITLE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. It may be hard to duplicate last year's historic season, but the Western New England College women's tennis team should have one of the top teams in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament this fall. Last year WNEC posted a perfect 16-0 record for its first unbeaten season ever. The Golden Bears also captured both their first conference regular season and tournament titles. Despite losing five players who combined for a 94-10 record, the Golden Bears feature senior Adrienne Nardelli (Wolcott, CT) who compiled a 21-3 record at the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles positions a year ago. She also captured both her flights at the GNAC Tournament. The Golden Bears will be bolstered by the return of senior Tricia Troiano (Stewart Manor, NY) who missed last year with a knee injury. She was the squad's top player as a sophomore. Western New England College has another strong performer in junior Monica Machon (Ellsworth, ME) who posted an overall 13-2 record primarily at the No 2 doubles position. Eight freshmen will challenge for starting assignments. Jennifer Kolins starts her fifth season as head coach with a 44-9 record. She is the three-time GNAC Coach-of-the-Year. 2003

Tennis WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE SERVES UP PERFECT 16-0 SEASON AND WINS FIRST GNAC TITLE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - For a team that wasn't in existence six years ago, the Western New England College women's tennis squad is now one of the athletics department's top programs. WNEC posted a perfect 16-0 record this fall for its first unbeaten season. The Golden Bears also captured both their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season and tournament titles. Western New England College defeated three-time defending GNAC champion Johnson & Wales, 6-3, on October 26 to complete its remarkable season. The match was tied 3-3 after the singles competition before the Golden Bears won all three doubles matches. Winning GNAC titles were junior Adrienne Nardelli (Wolcott, CT) at No. 1 singles, freshman Christine Reichlin (Westport, CT), No. 2 singles, and senior Liz Whitaker (Queensbury, NY), No. 3 singles. Nardelli and Reichlin captured the No. 1 doubles title, senior Jacqueline O'Brien (Belchertown, MA) and sophomore Monica Machon (Ellsworth, ME), No. 2 doubles, and Whitaker and senior co-captain Nicole Tucker (Saugerties, NY), No. 3 doubles. Nardelli finished with an overall 21-3 record while Reichlin was a perfect 23-0 in her rookie season. Whitaker was 21-1 while O'Brien had a 20-4 mark. Tucker enjoyed a solid season with a 16-4 record while senior co-captain Liz Gargan (Bellingham, MA) had a 14-1 mark and Machon a 10-2 record. Western New England College compiled a sensational 124-13 record (85-11 singles, 39-2 doubles) for a 90.5 winning percentage. Women's tennis has had an up-and-down history at Western New England College. According to available records, the program started in 1979, but was discontinued after three straight losing seasons. Women's tennis re-emerged as a varsity sport in 1989 and 1990 before taking an eight-year hiatus. Interestingly enough, when there weren't complete teams, several women tennis players participated on the men's tennis squads. Things changed dramatically when Mike Theulen took over as athletics director in 1998. Women's tennis rejoined the intercollegiate program and coach Richard Yam directed the squad to a 6-5 record the following year. In 2000, former University of Hartford standout Jennifer Kolins became head coach and the Golden Bears joined the GNAC. WNEC posted a 9-4 record that year followed by 10-3 mark in 2001 and 9-2 record last year. The Golden Bears also finished second in the 2002 GNAC Tournament. Kolins, who also serves as the school's men's tennis coach, knew she might have a special team this season when WNEC defeated city rival Springfield College for the first time 7-2 in the season opener. The Golden Bears then reeled off eight straight 9-0 victories before beating Johnson & Wales for the first time ever by the score of 5-4 in Providence, Rhode Island. WNEC ended the regular season with a 13-0 record, which included an 8-0 mark for first place in the conference. In the GNAC Tournament, Western New England College blanked Emmanuel College (7-0) and St. Joseph, Connecticut (6-0) in chilly conditions before beating Johnson & Wales at the indoor tennis center on the Wheaton College campus in Norton. Kolins was selected the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year for the third straight season. Her women's tennis record is 44-9 (83.0%). Kolins also serves as the athletics department community outreach coordinator. "Our success began during pre-season training before we had a single win," said Kolins. "The players camaraderie towards each other and passion for the team was truly magical." LIZ WHITAKER HONORED AS THE WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE FEMALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior Liz Whitaker (Queensbury, NY) was honored Tuesday (Oct. 28) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week. Whitaker won all four matches at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament to help the Golden Bears win their first conference title. She captured both the No. 3 singles and No. 3 doubles events in a 6-3 win over defending champion Johnson & Wales University in the championship match. A business major, Whitaker compiled a 21-1 record this fall (13-1 singles, 8-0 doubles) as the Golden Bears ended the best season in school history with a perfect 16-0 record. Sunday,

(Oct. 1, 2002) Western New England College's women's tennis team is off to a 4-0 start following an 8-1 win at Emerson College last Saturday in Boston. With the victory, the Golden Bears remained undefeated and tied for first place with Simmons College in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) with a 3-0 mark. WNEC's women's tennis program has enjoyed considerable success the last three seasons thanks mainly to the coaching efforts of Jennifer Kolins who joined the coaching staff in 2000. This is the first head collegiate coaching assignment for Kolins who led the Golden Bears to a 9-4 record in her rookie year and a 10-3 mark last fall. WNEC also qualified for the conference post-season tournament both years. Kolins, who also serves as the school's men's tennis coach, inherited a women's program that posted a 6-5 record in 1999 that was its first varsity season in eight years. She was selected both the 2001 GNAC Women's Tennis and the 2002 GNAC Men's Tennis Coach-of-the-Year. Kolins is a full-time staff member this year after receiving a grant from the NCAA, which made her the athletics department's Community Outreach Coordinator. "This is a great time to be a part of the Western New England College athletic program," said Kolins. "Involving the athletes in the community, and the community into our enthusiastic athletics department, is an unbelievably uplifting adventure. Being full time has also allowed me to have a closer connection with my tennis teams," said Kolins. A native of Philadelphia, Kolins is a 1999 graduate of the University of Hartford where she was a standout performer on the Hawks' tennis team. Kolins was active off the court during her collegiate career, serving as the Diversity Outreach Coordinator at the school while working as a volunteer with children in both the Philadelphia and Hartford Public Schools. As for this year, Kolins has a nice blend of veteran and first-year players hoping to lead Western New England College to both the GNAC regular season and tournament titles. The top player is sophomore Tricia Troiano (Stewart Manor, NY) who is 3-1 at both the No. 1 singles and doubles position. Troiano, who is also a member of the school's softball team, compiled an 11-2 mark at the No. 4 through No. 6 singles positions last year. Sophomore Adrienne Nardelli (Wolcott, CT) is 4-0 at the No. 2 singles position in her first year with the program. Nardelli also was selected to the school's Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is the GNAC SAAC Representative as well. Junior Jacqueline O'Brien (Belchertown, MA) has a 4-0 record at both the No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles positions in her first year on the squad. She was named the GNAC Player-of-the-Week on September 30 after winning three singles and doubles matches last week to improve her overall record to 8-0. O'Brien is a transfer from Assumption College. Freshman Monica Machon (Ellsworth, ME) and senior co-captain Jessica Fasulo (Medford, NY) each have a 4-0 mark playing both the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots. Machon was the GNAC Rookie-of-the-Week on Sept. 16. Western New England College has captured 33 of its 36 matches (22-2 singles, 11-1 doubles).
