Feb. 18-20, 2005 NEISDA Championship hosted by Bentley College SENIOR CO-CAPTAIN KELLI ARSENAULT WINS KAY FROMER AWARD SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College women's swimming co-captain Kelli Arsenault (Branford, CT) ended her career in sensational fashion by becoming the first individual in school history to receive the Kay Fromer Award as the senior swimmer scoring the most career points at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship on February 20. Arsenault, a social work major, totaled 86 points (60 individual, 26 relays) of the team's 142 points as the Golden Bears finished 14th in the 22-team field in the championship hosted by Bentley College from February 18-20. She scored 242 individual points in four years competing in the NEISDA championship. Arsenault placed fourth in three events this past weekend Ñ 50-yard backstroke (30.01 prelims, 30.04), 100 backstroke (school record 1:03.21 prelims, 1:03.22), and 200 backstroke (school record 2:15.75, 2:16.34). She also swam the first leg on the 200-yard (15th) and 400 medley (16th) relays teams, and the anchor leg on the 200 medley (15th) and 200 freestyle (18th) relays squads that scored points. "Kelli was a standout swimmer from day one," said WNEC coach Andrea Daley. "She has always been an asset to the team, not only as an athlete, but also as a leader. She is positive and supportive of her teammates and she works hard for her success. Kelli has played a key role in putting our swimming program on the map. She is an amazing person." Golden Bears Highlights from Day 3 (Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005) Western New England College finished 14th among 22 teams with 142 points. Senior co-captain Kelli Arsenault (Branford, CT) received the "Kay Fromer Award" as the women's senior swimmer scoring the most career points at the New Englands. She had 60 individual points at the meet this year and 242 points in four years. Arsenault placed fourth in the 50-yard backstroke (30.01 prelims, 30.04), 20 points. Senior co-captain Jennifer McCormick (Cheshire, CT) finished sixth in the 200-butterly (school record 2:27.30 prelims, 2:30.11), 18 points. Host Simmons won the event with 260 points followed by WNEC at 115. St. Joseph (Connecticut) was third (79) followed by Elms (70), Wheelock (56), and Norwich (53). Senior co-captain Kelli Arsenault (Branford, CT) led the Golden Bears by winning three events, the 50-yard backstroke (30.73, 30.28 prelims), 100 backstroke (GNAC record 1:05.09), and 200 freestyle (2:14.09, 2:13.81 prelims). JOSEPH (CONN.) RELAYS SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College will open its 2004-05 season at 1:00 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 30) at the St. Joseph College (Conn.) Blue Jay Pentathlon Relays in West Hartford, Connecticut. Last year WNEC posted a 7-4 record for its second straight winning season under coach Andrea Daley. The Golden Bears also captured their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship title, and finished ninth among 21 teams at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship. Heading the list of five returning letterwinners is senior Kelli Arsenault (Branford, CT) who was fourth in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, and sixth in the 50 backstroke at the NEISDA Championship. She also won her third straight 200 backstroke title at the GNAC Championship, finished first in the 50 backstroke, and swam on the winning 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams. Arsenault will serve as a team captain with senior Jennifer McCormick (Cheshire, CT) who led the team with 198 individual points last year. McCormick competes in the butterfly and individual medley events. The other returning letterwinners are junior Karen McCauley (Middletown, CT) in the freestyle and butterfly events, and sophomores Ashley Korbut (South Hadley, MA) in the distance freestyle and individual medley events and Samantha Munson (West Hartford, CT) in the freestyle and backstroke events. There are seven new members on the Golden Bears roster this season, sophomores Christina Fournier (Manchester, NH) and Jessica Mastriani (Southbury, CT), and freshmen Christina Carlsen (Auburn, MA), Lindsay Frenkel (Watertown, CT), Christa Melillo (Adams, MA), Caityln Russo (Weston, CT), and Laura Sobolewski (East Hartford, CT). Swimming standout Brianna Lutter (Watertown, CT) was honored Tuesday (Feb. 24) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week. Lutter, a freshman, scored 15 points as the Golden Bears finished ninth among 21 schools at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship. She placed 13th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:15.99), and 14th in both the 100 butterfly (1:08.48) and 200 butterfly (2:35.03) events. Jan. 24, 2004 WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE CAPTURES FIRST GNAC TITLE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. With 11 individuals scoring points and no diving program, Western New England College captured its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Swimming Championship Saturday, January 17 in Boston. The Golden Bears totaled 123 points despite having no individuals entered in the one-meter diving event to outdistance host Simmons College (108), St. Joseph College of Connecticut (105), and Norwich (22). WNEC had finished second the last two years and third during the 2000-01 season. The GNAC Women's Swimming Championship is usually held in December, but was postponed last month because of bad weather. "This was an exciting win for us," said second-year WNEC coach Andrea Daley. "Every member of our team scored points and we placed first without having a diving program." Western New England College's top performer was junior Kelli Arsenault (Branford, CT) who captured her third straight 200 backstroke (2:21.17) title. She also won the 50 backstroke (30.80), and swam the first leg on both the winning 200 medley relay (school record 2:00.72) and 400 freestyle relay (4:00.34) teams. Senior co-captain Elena Massa (Easthampton, MA) took the gold medal in the 50 breaststroke (school record 33.78 seconds) and finished third in the 50 freestyle (27.45). She also swam the second leg on both the winning 200 medley relay (school record 2:00.72) and 400 freestyle relay (4:00.34) teams. Sophomore Kathryn Meade (Chicopee, MA) won the gold medal in the 1000 freestyle (12:19.00) and placed fourth in both the 100 freestyle (1:02.55) and 500 freestyle (6:08.64) events. Among the other point scorers were: Freshman Brianna Lutter (Watertown, CT) who finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:11.86), third in the 200 freestyle (2:14.59), and third in the 500 freestyle (6:04.89). She also swam the anchor leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay team (4:00.34). Freshman Morgan Koepper (South Windsor, CT) placed second in both the 50 freestyle (26.60) and 100 freestyle (57.69) events, and swam the anchor leg on the winning 200 medley relay team (school record 2:00.72), and the third leg on the winning 400 freestyle relay squad (4:00.34). Freshman Ashley Korbut (South Hadley, MA) came home second in the 500 freestyle (5:57.35), fourth in the 400 individual medley (5:37.91), and fifth in the 50 butterfly (32.46). Junior Kelli Arsenault (Branford, CT) came from behind to swim the final leg on the relay edging the Engineers by .25 of a second. Oct. 24, 2003 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England College opened its season with a 131-110 loss against Simmons College in the Alumni Healthful Living Center. Senior co-captain Kelly Doherty (Poughkeepsie, NY) was a double winner in the 50 and 100-yard backstroke events. Freshmen Morgan Koepper (South Windsor, CT) and Brianna Lutter (Watertown, CT) made impressive collegiate debuts winning the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly events, respectively. WOMEN'S SWIMMING TEAM HOSTS SIMMONS FRIDAY IN SEASON OPENER SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Western New England College's women's swimming team will open its season with a dual meet against Simmons College at 6 p.m. Friday in the Alumni Healthful Living Center. The Golden Bears will compete in the St. Joseph College (Conn.) Relays on Saturday in West Hartford. Second-year coach Andrea Daley enjoyed a successful rookie season a year ago directing the Golden Bears to an 11-3 record and a second place finish at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship. "We are shooting to maintain a high won-loss percentage and hope to break the seven remaining school records that weren't broken last year," said Daley. "All of our individuals are looking for improvement and great successes are yet to be had." Heading the list of returnees is junior All-New England performer Kelli Arsenault (Branford, CT) in the backstroke. Among the other performers to watch are senior co-captains Elena Massa (Easthampton, MA) in the spring freestyle and breaststroke events. and Kelly Doherty (Poughkeepsie, NY) in the backstroke and freestyle events, and junior multi-event specialist Jennifer McCormick (Cheshire, CT). Seniors Krystal Homon (South Royalston, MA) and Vickie Tartavoulle (Levittown, NY), and sophomores Karen McCauley (Middletown, CT) and Kathryn Meade (Chicopee, MA) should also make valuable contributions this season. Swimming GOLDEN BEARS ENJOY SUCCESSFUL SEASON WITH 11-3 RECORD SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Mar. 6, 2003) Western New England College's women's swimming team enjoyed one of its best seasons ever by compiling an 11-3 record this winter under rookie coach Andrea Daley. The Golden Bears also placed second at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Champion ship and 10th among 20 schools at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association Division II/III Championship hosted by Bentley College. "I am very proud of the success that the team had this season," said Daley. "There were a total of 14 school records broken and the team moved up three places in its standing at the New Englands. (Feb. 18, 2003) Sophomore Kelli Arsenault (Branford, CT) was honored Tuesday as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week. Arsenault, a sophomore, captured both the 100-yard backstroke and 200 freestyle events in a 135-123 victory over host Eastern Connecticut State University on February 12. The victory gave the Golden Bears an 11-3 record under rookie coach Andrea Daley. (Feb. 4, 2003) Swimming standout Michelle Boss (Fremont, NH) was honored Tuesday as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week. Boss, a sophomore, won both the 50-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke events in a 131-100 victory at Salem State College, and captured both the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly events in a 161-79 win at Western Connecticut State University. She is a sport management major. WNEC ENJOYING SUCCESSFUL SEASON UNDER ROOKIE COACH ANDREA DALEY SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Feb. 3, 2003) When Western New England College's women's swimming team defeated host Salem State College, 131-100, last Saturday, it gave the Golden Bears an 8-3 record and assured the Golden Bears of a winning season under first-year coach Andrea Daley. Junior Elena Massa (Easthampton, MA) won the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle events while sophomores Michelle Boss (Fremont, NH), 50 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and Jennifer McCormick (Cheshire, CT), 50 breaststroke, 1000 freestyle were also double winners. In WNEC's 161-79 win at Western Connecticut on January 30, Massa also captured the 50 breaststroke and 50 butterfly while Boss won the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly, and senior co-captain Suzanne Monahan (Madison, NJ) the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley. "We have established 12 school records this season with some records broken more than once," said Daley who swam at Springfield College. "This year our team has undergone an intensified workout routine and this challenge has helped them reach a new level in performance. (Dec. 10, 2002) Sophomore Jennifer McCormick (Cheshire, CT) was honored Tuesday (Dec. 10) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week. McCormick, a sophomore, placed second in the 400-yard individual medley with a school record time of 5 minutes, 22.07 seconds at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship. She also finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:08.41) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:48.46) events, and swam the third leg on the 200-medley relay team that took second in a school record time of 2:01.94. With McCormick helping to lead the way, WNEC placed second in the team standings for the second straight year. McCormick is an education/psychology major. |
