Soccer SEVEN GOLDEN BEARS NAMED TO ALL-GNAC TEAM SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Ñ Seven Western New England College players have been selected to the 2004 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer Team. All-GNAC First Team honors went to junior back Melissa Fleshman (Troy, NY), junior midfielder Erinne Goodwin (East Longmeadow, MA), sophomore forward Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA), and sophomore goalie Marisa Sullivan (Halesite, NY). Junior back Renee Robichaud (Peabody, MA), sophomore midfielder Kristin Thornton (Bedford, NH), and freshman forward Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH) made the All-GNAC Second Team. DeAngelo led the Golden Bears in scoring with 41 points (16 goals, 9 assists) followed by Goodwin with 20 points (7 goals, 6 assists), and Matte with 19 points (8 goals, 3 assists). Thornton was a repeat selection on the second squad after scoring 14 points (3 goals, 8 assists) despite playing with injuries most of the season. Fleshman (a honorable mention selection last year) and Robichaud anchored the defensive unit that allowed only 29 goals in 21 matches. Sullivan started all 21 contests compiling a 1.30 goals-against-average with nine shutouts. Western New England College posted a 12-8-1 record and placed second in the GNAC Tournament for the second straight year. The Golden Bears outscored their opponents by a 63-29 margin this past season.
Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004 BOSTON, Mass. Sophomore Nicole Zielinski (Foxboro, MA) scored the winning goal 4:58 into overtime to lead top-seeded Simmons College to a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Western New England College in a championship match of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament. WNEC out-shot the Sharks by an 18-8 margin, but couldn't score in suffering only its second shutout of the season. This was the second straight year that the Golden Bears (12-8-1) finished second in the GNAC Tournament. Junior Renee Robichaud (Peabody, MA), and sophomores Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA) and Ashley St. John (Barre, VT) made the GNAC All-Tournament Team. Tuesday,
Nov. 2, 2004 BOSTON, Mass. The East Longmeadow duo did it again. Sophomore Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA) scored the game winner 4:18 into the second overtime period as third-seeded Western New England College upset second-seeded Emerson College, 1-0, in a semifinal match of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament. Emerson had posted a 3-2 victory over WNEC on September 22 in Springfield. Today's match was played at the University of Massachusetts-Boston campus. Junior Erinne Goodwin (East Longmeadow, MA) assisted on the winning shot that propelled the Golden Bears into the conference championship match for the sixth consecutive year. Sophomore goalie Marisa Sullivan (Halesite, MA) recorded 10 saves for her ninth shutout of the season. The victory was the fifth in a row for the Golden Bears who are now 12-7-1. WNEC will play either fourth-seeded Johnson & Wales or top-seeded Simmons on Saturday with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III Championship. DANIELLE MATTE GAINS GNAC ROOKIE AWARD FOR THIRD TIME SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College freshman Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer Rookie-of-the-Week on Monday (No. 1) for the third time this season. Matte scored a goal in a win over Rivier College in the regular season finale and had another goal in a victory over Norwich University in a quarterfinal match of the conference tournament. Matte, a business major, has scored a goal in four consecutive matches. She is the top-scoring freshman on the WNEC squad with 19 points (8 goals, 3 assists). Saturday,

Junior Erinne Goodwin (East Longmeadow, MA) scored two goals and had one assist to lead third-seeded Western New England College to a 4-0 victory over seventh-seeded Norwich University in a quarterfinal match of the 2004 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament. Sophomore Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA) and freshman Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH) also had goals for the Golden Bears. Sophomores Ashley St. John (Barre, VT) and Cori Gavriilidis (Northvale, NJ) chipped in with assists, Sophomore goalkeeper Marisa Sullivan (Halesite, NY) made three saves for her eighth shutout of the season. Oct. 27, 2004 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College ended its regular season with a 7-0 win over visiting Rivier College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match. Senior Jana Loper (Glastonbury, CT) recorded a hat trick and added an assist in her final regular season match. Sophomore Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA) also scored three goals in the victory. WNEC (10-7-1) will be the third seed in the GNAC tournament, which begins Saturday. Oct. 23, 2004 WEST HARTFORD, Conn. Western New England College is starting to play well down the stretch. With junior Erinne Goodwin (East Longmeadow, MA) and sophomore Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow) each scoring a goal and assist, the Golden Bears defeated St. Joseph College (Conn.), 4-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match for their third straight victory. WNEC scored all of its goals in the first half to improve to 9-7-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference. Junior Melissa Mattice (Oneonta, NY) opened the scoring in the 12th minute and DeAngelo followed with her team high 11th goal of the season five minutes later. Freshman Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH) hit the back of net in the 28th minute while Goodwin followed with the Golden Bears' final goal in the 31st minute. Sophomore Kait Jarret (Douglas, MA) and freshman Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH) each added a goal and assist while freshman Jackie Dubey (Middlefield, CT) scored her first collegiate goal in the 41st minute. Oct. 16, 2004 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Sophomore Jen Woishnis (Chicopee, MA) likes playing against Johnson & Wales University. Her first goal of the season with 1:42 remaining in the first half was the game winner as Western New England College posted a 1-0 victory over JWU in an important Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match. Sophomore Marissa Sullivan (Halesite, NY) made two saves in recording her fourth shutout of the season. Last year Woishnis had the wining score in the Golden Bears' 1-0 win over the Wildcats in the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament. Oct. 12, 2004 DANBURY, Conn. Western Connecticut State University scored all of its goals in a 21-minute stretch en route to a 3-1 victory over Western New England College in a non-conference game. The Colonials took a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute before sophomore Ashley St. John (Barre, VT) tied the contest with her third goal of the season in the 44th minute. Junior Melissa Mattice (Oneonta, NY) assisted on the shot. WCSU, however, scored with 58 seconds remaining in the half and again in the 55th minute. Oct. 6, 2004 NORTHFIELD, Vt. Freshman Jill Caracciolo (Burnt Hills, NY) fired home the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute to give Western New England College a 2-1 victory over Norwich University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match. The Golden Bears trailed 1-0 at hlf-time before sophomore Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA) tied the contest early in the second half with an assist from senior Jill Boutin (N. Sidney, ME). Caracciolo then found the back of the net for the second straight game. Junior Erinne Goodwin (East Longmeadow, MA) assisted on the winning shot. Caracciolo scored her first collegiate goal that gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead in a 2-2 overtime tie against defending GNAC champion Emmanuel College. Oct. 2, 2004 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. In a rematch of last year's Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship game, Western New England College and Emmanuel battled to a 2-2 overtime tie. The Golden Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by freshman Jill Caracciolo (Burnt Hills, NY) (the first of her collegiate career) in the 13th minute and sophomore Ashley St. John (Barre, VT) in the 17th minute. Sophomore Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA) had assists on each. The Saints tied the game with unassisted goals by freshman Stephanie Towle (Hingham, MA) in the 20th minute and junior Jessica Steverman (Weymouth, MA) in the 70th minute. WNEC sophomore goalie Marisa Sullivan (Halesite, NY) and Emmanuel senior goalie Kanee Chlebda (Medway, MA) each made game saving saves in the late minutes of regulation and in both overtime periods. The Golden Bears received first half goals from juniors Liz Eldridge (Westborough, MA) and Melissa Fleshman (Troy, NY), and freshman Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH). Senior Ellen Boss (Dracut, MA) scored the game-winner with 1:38 remaining in the second overtime period as visiting Emerson College remained undefeated with a 3-2 victory over Western New England College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match. The Golden Bears sent the match into the extra session when sophomore Ashley St. John (Barre, VT) scored her first goal of the season following a corner kick with an assist from sophomore Kristin Thornton (Bedford, NH) in the 83rd minute. Emerson took a 1-0 lead 20 seconds into the game before WNEC sophomore Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA) tied the match with her fifth goal of the season with an assist from sophomore Kait Jarret (Douglas, MA) in the 13th minute. The Lions (4-0-2, 2-0-1) went ahead 2-1 on a goal by junior Caitlin Joyce (Norfolk, MA) in the 69th minute. Ñ Connecticut College broke open a close game with four unanswered goals in the second half for a 6-3 non-conference victory over Western New England College Freshman Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH), junior Renee Robichaud (Peabody, MA), and sophomore Kait Jarrett (Douglas, MA) had the goals for the Golden Bears. It was the first collegiate goal for Matte. Robichaud's goal - her first of the season - tied the match in the 54th minute before the Camels scored four straight break the match open. Sept. 9, 2004 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Sophomore Kait Jarret (Douglas, MA) scored the game-winner with her first goal of the season 2:27 into overtime as Western New England College posted a 2-1 decision over city rival Springfield College. The victory avenged a 4-0 loss to the Pride last season. Sophomore Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA) had the assist on the winning goal. She also gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead with a goal 5:14 into the opening period. Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Sullivan (Halesite, NY) celebrated her 19th birthday by making a season high 14 saves. Springfield tied the match on an unassisted goal by senior tri-captain Molly Desroches (Belchertown, MA) in the 60th minute. Junior goalkeeper Christina Davis (Orange, CT) finished with four saves. "This is a big win for us," said WNEC coach Ron Dias. "Megan played a strong game and this was the second straight match that she had a goal and assist. Sept. 5, 2004 GORHAM, Maine Ñ The East Longmeadow, Massachusetts connection of junior Erinne Goodwin and sophomore Megan DeAngelo came through with clutch performances as Western New England College rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory over first-time opponent University of Wisconsin-La Crosse at the Southern Maine Invitational. The win was the first of the season for the Golden Bears who are now 1-2. The Eagles (1-1) took a 1-0 half-time lead before DeAngelo tied the match with her first goal in a Golden Bears uniform with an assist from classmate Kristin Thornton (Bedford, NH) in the 82nd minute. Goodwin then netted the game-winner, with an assist from DeAngelo, just 1:16 into the extra session. Saturday,
Sept. 4, 2004 GORHAM, Maine Sophomore Tracy Grimes (Rochester, NY) scored the game-winner 3:21 into overtime as SUNY Fredonia posted a 2-1 win over Western New England College in the Southern Maine Tournament. The match was a defensive battle until junior Erinne Goodwin (East Longmeadow, MA) put the Golden Bears ahead with her first goal of the season in the 75th minute. Sept. 1, 2004 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Freshman Breanne Lucey (Keene, NH) scored two goals with an assist, including the game-winner with 4:46 remaining, to lead visiting Keene State College to a 3-1 victory over Western New England College in the season opener for both teams. After a scoreless first half, Lucey put the Owls ahead 1-0 when she fired home a shot off her own rebound at the 68:15 mark. WNEC tied the match when sophomore Kristin Thornton (Bedford, NH) scored on a penalty kick (following a Keene handball) at 80:14. Lucey again scored off another rebound shot at 85:14 and the Owls sealed the win when sophomore Courtney Gately (Canton, MA) scored 68 seconds later with an assist from Lucey. WNEC sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Sullivan (Halesite, NY) made 11 saves (including several nice stops in the first half) in a solid performance while senior Michelle Mason (Fairport, NY) had one stop for the visitors. WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE VIES FOR GNAC TOURNAMENT TITLE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Aug. 25, 2004) Last year was suppose to be a rebuilding season for the Western New England College's women's soccer team, but the Golden Bears surprised many people by placing second in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament. WNEC finished with a 9-10-1 record, including a 6-2-1 mark for third place in the conference. The Golden Bears ended the season on a positive note by winning five of their last six matches. Western New England College hopes to challenge for the GNAC crown with 10 returning starters led by All-GNAC performers, senior forward Jana Loper (Glastonbury, CT), sophomore forward Kristin Thornton (Bedford, NH), sophomore midfielder Kait Jarret (Douglas, MA), and sophomore back Melissa Fleshman (Troy, NY). Loper (11 goals, 4 assists), a three-time All-GNAC selection, and Thornton (7 goals, 12 assists) tied for the team lead in scoring with 26 points while Jarret contributed 21 points (8 goals, 5 assists). Fleshman anchored the defensive unit that allowed only 32 goals (1.58 avg.). Among the other players to watch are senior back Amy Camerota (Westfield, MA) who is among the top defenders in the conference, junior midfielder Erinne Goodwin (East Longmeadow, MA) who compiled 18 points (6 goals, 6 assists), sophomore forward Ashley St. John (Barre, VT) who scored 13 points (5 goals, 3 assists), and sophomore forward Jen Woishnis (Chicopee, MA) who made several key contributions near the end of the season. Camerota, Loper, and senior midfielder Jill Boutin (N. Sidney, ME) will serve as the team tri-captains. The Golden Bears have a solid keeper in sophomore Marisa Sullivan (Halesite, NY) who had a 1.50 goals-against-average and five shutouts in her rookie season. Top newcomers include sophomore forward Megan DeAngelo (East Longmeadow, MA), a transfer from Bryant, and two freshmen, midfielder Jill Caraciolo (Burnt Hills, NY) and forward Danielle Matte (Nashua, NH) who played on the same club team with Kristin Thornton. WNEC opens its 21st season on Wednesday, September 1, at home against perennial regional power Keene State College. The Golden Bears will meet first-time opponents Fredonia (N.Y.) and Wisconsin-La Crosse at the Southern Maine Tournament September 4-5. Matches against New England Division III powers Connecticut College, Western Connecticut, Williams, and city rival Springfield, also are on the slate. "Our team has a burning desire to get back to the GNAC championship game," said coach Ron Dias who is in his 11th season. "I'm confident that our captains will be able to motivate our student-athletes and we're looking forward to a successful season." Dias, who has guided his teams to four GNAC titles, is the winningest women's soccer coach in school history with a 131-72-5 record (64.2%). Sidney, ME), Amy Camerota (Westfield, MA), and Jana Loper (Glastonbury, CT) will serve as tri-captains of the 2004 Western New England College's women's soccer team. Boutin plays a midfield position for the Golden Bears while Camerota is a defender and Loper a forward. Loper tied for the team lead in scoring last year with 26 points (11 goals, 4 assists) while Boutin and Camerota each scored one goal. Loper also made the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) First Team. "These three players have a burning desire to get back the GNAC Tournament title," said WNEC coach Ron Dias.
