SEVEN WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE PLAYERS NAMED TO 2004 NFHCA DIVISION III ACADEMIC TEAM

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) named seven Western New England College players to its 2004 Academic Team on Friday (Mar. 4).

They were senior Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH), English; junior Kaitlin Boyd (Coram, NY), Government; sophomores Melissa Ezold (York, ME), Psychology, and Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT), Business, and freshmen Amy Cunningham (LaGrangeville, NY), Math, Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ), Math, and Emily Popham (Orange, MA), Business.

Boyd made the honor team for the third consecutive year while Guay (a team tri-captain), Ezold, and Jameson were repeat selections.

To earn a spot on the NFHCA Academic Team, a player must be a starter or important reserve, and have a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade-point-average in her major. In addition, the NFHCA recognized Western New England College for having a 3.0 or better team grade-point-average.

Western New England College, under second-year coach Sarah Kelly posted a 14-9 record that was a school record for wins. The Golden Bears finished first in the North Atlantic Conference during the regular season with an 8-1 mark and placed second in the conference tournament.

SOPHOMORE ALLISON JAMESON NAMED TO NFHCA DIVISION III NEW ENGLAND EAST REGION TEAM

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College sophomore forward Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) was named Monday (Nov. 22) to the 2004 STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III New England East Region All-Star First Team.

Jameson led the Golden Bears in scoring for the second straight year with 50 points (22 goals, 6 assists) this fall that was the second best total in school history. She is a two-time North Atlantic Conference (NAC) First Team selection. Last year Jameson was the NAC Rookie-of-the-Year. A business major, she is fourth on the school's all-time scoring list with 76 points.

Western New England College posted a 14-9 record that was a school record for wins, breaking the old mark of 12 set two years ago. The Golden Bears captured the regular season NAC title with an 8-1 mark and placed second in the conference tournament.

THREE WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE PLAYERS SELECTED TO ALL-NORTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE (NAC) TEAM

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Three Western New England College players have been selected to the 2004 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Field Hockey Team.

Sophomore forward Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) and junior forward Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) made the All-NAC First Team while junior defender Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA) was named to the All-NAC Second Team.

Jameson is a repeat selection on the first unit after leading the Golden Bears in scoring for the second straight year with 50 points (22 goals, 6 assists) that was the second best total in school history. Last year she was the NAC Rookie-of-the-Year. A business major, Jameson is fourth on the school's all-time scoring list with 76 points.

Katz, a marketing major, was second on the team with 30 points (11 goals, 8 assists). She was an All-NAC Second Team selection her freshman season. Katz is the school's third all-time leading scorer with 82 points.

Cloutier was the squad's top defensive player who also contributed seven points (3 goals, 1 assist). She is a criminal justice major and a pitcher on the school's nationally ranked softball team.

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Western New England College fell behind by two goals in the first 3:34 and things didn't get better as the fifth-seeded Golden Bears dropped a 6-0 decision to fourth-seeded Babson College in a quarterfinal game of the ECAC Division III New England Championship.

Babson out-shot WNEC (who was playing in its first post-season tournament ever) by a 50-13 margin scoring three times in each half.

Junior Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) did her best to keep the Golden Bears in the game by making 17 saves.

Despite the loss, Western New England College finished the best season in school history with an impressive 14-9 record that is a school record for wins.

Congratulations to coach Sarah Kelly, her staff, and players for a great season.

GOLDEN BEARS VISIT BABSON COLLEGE IN ECAC DIVISION III NEW ENGLAND FIELD HOCKEY TOURNAMENT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The best season in Western New England College field hockey history continues when the fifth-seeded Golden Bears visit fourth-seeded Babson College at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 10) in a quarterfinal round game of the 2004 ECAC Division III New England Tournament.

This will be the program's first ECAC post-season appearance in its 24-year history. The Golden Bears enter the tournament with a 14-8 record, which is a school record for wins, breaking the old mark of 12 set two years ago.

Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) leads the team in scoring with 50 points (22 goals, 6 assists) followed by junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) with 30 points (11 goals, 8 assists), and freshman Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) with 21 points (9 goals, 3 assists). Junior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) has a 2.58 goals-against-average and 76.6 save percentage.

Babson blanked Western New England College 6-0 in the regular season meeting on October 26.

Western New England College captured its first ever regular season North Atlantic Conference (NAC) crown with an 8-1 mark, but finished second in the NAC Tournament after losing to Maine-Farmington 2-1 in the championship game last Saturday.

In other games Wednesday, top-seeded Plymouth State hosts No. 8 Worcester State; No. 2 Wellesley entertains No. 7 Simmons, and No. 6 Clark hosts No. 3 Endicott. The highest remaining seeds will host tournament semifinals on Saturday followed by the championship game on Sunday.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Tournament MVP senior Mary Sinclair (New Sharon, ME) scored the winning goal with 11:04 remaining to lead second-seeded University of Maine-Farmington to a 2-1 victory over top-seeded Western New England College in the championship game of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament.

It was the third consecutive tournament crown for the Beavers (14-5) who advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament at a campus site on Wednesday.

WNEC (14-8) took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, MA) (her 22nd of the season) at the 21:02 mark with an assist from classmate Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME).

Maine-Farmington junior midfielder Kristy Veasie (Dexter, ME) tied the contest with an assist from junior Mary Berry (Norridgewock, ME) with 7:20 left before intermission. The game remained tied until Sinclair was able to find the back of the net with an assist from senor forward Becky Christiansen (Windham, ME).

Western New England College won the regular season NAC title with an 8-1 mark, which included a 3-2 overtime win over Maine-Farmington on September 19 at Golden Bear Stadium.

Berry, Christiansen, and senior goalie Ashleigh Biette (Freeport, ME) who finished with 10 saves made the NAC All-Tournament Team for the Beavers.

Jameson, junior defender Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA), and junior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) who recorded nine saves, represented the Golden Bears on the All-Tournament squad.

WNEC, which set a school record wins this season, hopes to receive an invitation to the ECAC Division III New England Tournament that begins Wednesday.

In 2002, the Beavers defeated the Golden Bears, 5-2, in the NAC Tournament championship game played in Waterville, Maine.

The champion of the NAC Tournament champion will advance to the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time in 2004.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored two goals, including the game-winner with 18:22 remaining, to lift top-seeded Western New England College to a 3-1 victory over fifth-seeded Becker College in a semifinal round game of the 2004 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament.

The Golden Bears (14-7) will host second-seeded University of Maine-Farmington (a 1-0 winner over third-seeded Simmons College) at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

The champion of the NAC Tournament advances for the first time to the NCAA Division III Championship.

WNEC led 1-0 at half-time following a goal by junior Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA) with an assist from senior Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH) only 12:35 into the game.

Becker (9-9) tied the contest on an unassisted goal by sophomore Deneiges Labbe (Lewiston, ME) 5:07 into the second half.

Katz then knocked in the winning goal in front of the net with an assist from sophomore Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) and added an insurance goal (her 11th of the season) with 13:40 left in the game with an assist from sophomore Audrey Kelton (Wilder, VT).

Junior Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) made seven saves for the Golden Bears while freshman Katy Day (Georgetown, DE) had 10 stops for the Hawks.

WNEC defeated Maine-Farmington, 3-2 in overtime, September 19 at Golden Bear Stadium.

SOPHOMORE ALLISON JAMESON NAMED NAC PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) was selected the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Field Hockey Player-of-the-Week on Tuesday (Nov. 2).

She scored a career-high four goals in a win over Husson College in a quarterfinal game of the conference tournament.

A business major, Jameson leads the Golden Bears with 48 points (21 goals, 6 assists).

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) scored a career high four goals to lead top-ranked Western New England College to a 7-2 decision over eighth-seeded Husson College (Maine) in a quarterfinal game of the 2004 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament.

With the victory, the Golden Bears (13-7) established a school record for wins breaking the old mark of 12 set two years ago.

Jameson scored all her goals in the first half while classmate Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) also scored to give WNEC a 5-0 lead at half-time.

Freshmen Emily Popham (Orange, MA) and Bridget Bates (Greenfield, MA) scored in the second half. It was the first collegiate goal for Popham.

Senior Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH) and freshman Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) contributed two assists while juniors Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA) each had an assist.

Western New England College will host a semifinal round game of the NAC Tournament on Tuesday against either Becker or Lasell.

GOLDEN BEARS TOP SEED IN NORTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE (NAC) TOURNAMENT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College is the top-seeded team in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Field Hockey Tournament that begins Saturday (Oct. 30) at four campus sites.

WNEC will host #8 Husson College (Maine) at 6:00 p.m. at Golden Bear Stadium. Western New England College enters the tournament with a 12-7 record that ties the school record for wins set two years.

The Golden Bears posted an 8-1 mark against conference opponents. Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) leads the team in scoring with 40 points (17 goals, 6 assists) followed by junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) with 25 points (9 goals, 7 assists), and freshman Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) with 19 points (9 goals, 1 assist).

Junior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) has a 2.72 goals-against-average and 75.3 save percentage.

In other games Saturday, #7 Elms visits #2 Maine-Farmington, #6 Thomas (Maine) plays at #3 Simmons, and #5 Becker visits #4 Lasell.

The NAC Tournament semifinals will take place on Tuesday (Nov. 2) with the championship game slated for Saturday (Nov. 6).

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Babson College scored twice in the opening half and coasted to a 6-0 victory over Western New England College in a non-conference game.

Despite the loss, the Golden Bears finished the regular season with a 12-7 record that ties the school record for wins in a season previously established two years ago.

BOSTON, Mass. — Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) scored with 2:11 remaining in the game but it was too late as Western New England College dropped a 2-1 decision to Simmons College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) contest.

The Golden Bears (12-6) suffered their first conference loss in nine outings.

Simmons led 1-0 at half-time and took a 2-0 lead at the 42:13 mark of the second half.

Junior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) finished with six saves for WNEC.

BANGOR, Maine — Four sophomores scored key points as Western New England College made school history by clinching its first regular season North Atlantic Conference (NAC) title with a 3-1 victory over Husson College.

Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) scored two goals while classmate Monique Hammith (Westbrook, ME) tallied her first goal of the season with 17:30 remaining in the contest.

Jameson opened the scoring with an unassisted goal with 10:35 left in the opening has to give the Golden Bears a 1-0 half-time advantage.

After Husson tied the contest 1:30 into the second half, Jameson scored the game-winner with 22:39 left with an assist from classmate Audrey Kelton (Wilder, VT) at 22:39.

Hammith then scored the final goal of the game with an assist from sophomore Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME).

Junior Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) made nine saves for the Golden Bears who are now 12-5 overall and 8-0 in the conference.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College came close to defeating a nationally-ranked team.

Freshman Harriet Hoyer (Hamburg, Germany) scored the game-winner 2:31 into overtime as No. 20 Manhattanville College posted a 1-0 victory over upset-minded Western New England College in a non-conference game.

Senior goalie April Yeomans (Lindenhurst, NY) made six saves, including two key stops early in the extra session. The Valiants are now 12-3.

WNEC, which saw its six-game winning streak snapped, falls to 11-5. The Golden Bears out-shot the Valiants by a 13-8 margin.

JUNIOR ALYSSA KATZ NAMED WNEC FEMALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) was honored Tuesday (Oct. 19) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week.

Katz, a forward, had the game-winning goal in a 2-0 overtime victory at Nichols College. She also scored goals in wins over Lasell College (2-1) and Wheelock College (6-0). Katz has scored a goal in each of her last four games.

She is second on the team in scoring with 24 points 99 goals, 6 assists) and fourth on the school's all-time scoring list with 76 points (27 goals, 22 assists).

A marketing major, Katz also was named the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Player-of-the-Week.

Western New England College is 11-4 and first in the NAC with a 7-0 mark.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Playing its third game in four days, Western New England College stayed unbeaten in the North Atlantic Conference with an easy 6-0 victory over Wheelock College.

Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) led the Golden Bears' attack with three goals and an assist. She leads the team in scoring with 34 points (14 goals, 6 assists). Freshman Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) added a goal and assist.

Junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored a goal for the fourth straight game while freshman Suzanne Loutrel (Springfield, VT) had her first collegiate goal. Senior Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH) and sophomore Monique Hammith (Westbrook, ME) also had assists.

Western New England College is 11-4 after winning its school-record sixth consecutive game. The Golden Bears are first in the conference with a 7-0 mark.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Sophomore Cara Hebert (Bennington, VT) picked a great time to score her first collegiate goal.

Her score with 32:38 remaining in the contest was the game winner in Western New England College's 2-1 victory over Lasell College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC).

Junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead with her eighth goal of the season only 56 seconds into the contest. The Lasers scored at 14:36 to tie the contest 1-1 at halftime.

This was the fifth consecutive win for Western New England College who improved its record to 10-4 and 6-0 in the conference.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Juniors Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA) scored first half goals to lead Western New England College to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Nichols College.

Playing for the first time in nine days, the Golden Bears (9-4) recorded their fourth straight win (eighth in nine games) and first shutout of the season.

Senior Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH) and freshman Emily Popham (Orange, MA) had assists for WNEC while junior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) made three saves.

Junior goalie Kara Cicchiello (Willimantic, CT) led the Bison (2-11) with 19 saves in a strong performance.

WNEC 4, Anna Maria 3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College is beginning to like one-goal games.

The Golden Bears opened a five-game homestand with a 4-3 victory over Anna Maria College in a non-conference contest.

Freshman Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) continued her fine play with two goals while junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) each added a goal and assist.

Eggert scored her seventh and eighth goals of the year in a 2:07 span late in the opening half to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead at the 7:24 mark.

Leading 2-1 at half-time, WNEC took a 3-1 advantage on an unassisted goal by Jameson (her team high 11th of the season) only 3:08 into the second half.

AMC scored four minutes later to again cut the margin to one before Katz gave the hosts another two-goal cushion with her sixth goal of the season with 16:07 remaining in the game.

The Amcats scored again with 13:45 left, but the Golden Bears held on to win their third straight one-goal outing.

Junior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) had six saves for the Golden Bears who improved their record to 8-4 after winning for the seventh time in their last eight games. WNEC is 4-1 in one-goal games this season.

Western New England College has nine days off before its next game on Thursday, October 14, against Nichols College at Golden Bear Stadium.

LEICESTER, Mass. — Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) scored the game-winner off a penalty corner with 3:29 remaining in the game as Western New England College posted a 2-1 victory over Becker College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game.

It was the 10th goal of the season for Jameson who leads the team in scoring with 24 points.

With the win, the Golden Bears improved their record to 7-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference.

Sophomore Audrey Kelton (Wilder, VT) had the assist on the winning goal. She gave Western New England College a 1-0 lead with her first collegiate goal of the season with 16:19 left in the opening half.

Junior Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) finished with eight saves.

ALLISON JAMESON AND CORI EGGERT RECEIVE WEEKLY AWARDS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) was honored Tuesday (Sept. 28) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week.

Jameson, a forward, scored the game-winner in a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Elms College. She also had an assist in a 3-2 overtime loss against tough Mount Holyoke College. Jameson is tied for first in scoring in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) with 22 points (9 goals, 4 assists). Jameson is a business major.

Freshman forward/midfielder Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) was voted the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Field Hockey Player-of-the-Week on Monday (Sept. 27). She had the tying goal in a 2-1 win over Elms College and both goals in a 3-2 overtime loss against tough Mount Holyoke College. She has 12 points (6 goals) in five contests this season. Eggert is a math major.

CHICOPEE, Mass. — Western New England College scored two goals in a 45 second span in the second half to remain undefeated in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) with a 2-1 victory over Elms College.

Freshman Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) tied the contest with her sixth goal of the season with 28:01 remaining in the game with an assist from sophomore Cara Hebert (Bennington, VT).

Sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) then scored the game-winner with her team high ninth goal at the 27:16 mark with an assist from classmate Audrey Kelton (Wilder, VT).

The Golden Bears are now 6-4 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Mount Holyoke 3, WNEC 2 (ot)

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Sophomore Susan West (Gwynedd Valley, PA) scored two goals, including the game-winner with 4:48 left in overtime, to lift visiting Mount Holyoke College to a 3-2 victory over Western New England College.

Freshman Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) scored a goal in each half for the Golden Bears who made an impressive showing against the defending NEWMAC champions.

Mount Holyoke took a 1-0 lead with 14:52 left in the first half. Eggert then tied the contest six minutes later for a 1-1 tie at half-time.

West then scored an unassisted goal at 25:48 of the second half before Eggert scored again at 22:54 to tie the contest for the second time.

Junior Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) had 12 stops for WNEC (5-4) who saw its four-game win streak come to an end.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Freshman Cori Eggert (Denville, NJ) was honored Tuesday (Sept. 21) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week.

Eggert, a forward, scored the tying goal with 1:04 remaining in the second half and the game-winner with 7:46 into overtime in a 3-2 victory over defending North Atlantic Conference champion University of Maine-Farmington.

In the previous game, Eggert scored her first collegiate goal in a 6-1 win over Thomas College (Maine). She is a math major.

Maine-Farmington took an early 1-0 lead before sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) tied the game with 12:28 remaining in the half. She also assisted on Eggert's first goal.

UMF scored again with 3:57 left for a 2-1 half-time lead.

WNEC junior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) was instrumental in the win making 12 saves, including four in overtime.

WNEC is now 5-3 and 3-0 in the North Atlantic Conference. The Golden Bears have a four-game winning streak.

WESTFIELD, Mass. — Junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) each scored goals for Western New England College in a 4-2 loss at Westfield State College.

Junior Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA) had an assist on Jameson's goal that tied the game at 1-1 with 4:17 left in the first half. The Owls scored with less than a minute before the break and again with 14:13 remaining in the game for a 3-1 advantage.

Katz' goal closed the margin to one with 11:43 left, but Westfield added an insurance score with 4:56 left in the contest.

The Pride led 2-0 at halftime and held the Golden Bears to only four shots in the contest.

In the third place contest, Eastern Connecticut State University defeated Endicott College 4-3 in a game decided on strokes (2-0).

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College recorded its first win of the season with an exciting 3-2 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in an opening round game of the Zenaty Invitational.

The Golden Bears trailed 1-0 before freshman Bridget Bates (Turners Falls, MA) tied the score with a goal on her first collegiate shot with 4:08 gone in the opening half.

WNEC took the lead for good when sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) scored eight minutes later. Junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) assisted on both goals.

Senior Amanda Graff (Centereach, NY) then drilled home the eventual game-winner 1:35 before halftime. Sophomore Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) received the assist.

The Golden Bears allowed a goal early in the second half, but held on for the victory. Junior goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) had another strong game with 12 saves.

In the other match-up, host Springfield defeated Endicott 4-1.

KEENE, N.H — Keene State College scored twice in the opening half and never looked back in taking a 3-0 victory over visiting Western New England College in the season opener for both teams. The Golden Bears managed only six shots. Junior goal-keeper Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) kept the score close by making 18 saves in a strong performance.

WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE AIMS FOR NORTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE TITLE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College's field hockey team hopes to make a serious challenge for the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament crown in 2004 with eight starters among its 13 returning players.

WNEC posted a 9-11 record under rookie coach Sarah Kelly last season that tied as the third highest win total in the program's 23-year history. The Golden Bears also advanced to the semifinals of the NAC Tournament.

Heading the list of returnees is sophomore Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) who led the team in scoring last season with 26 points (10 goals, 6 assists). Jameson was the NAC Rookie-of-the-Year and a first team conference All-Star.

The Golden Bears also have two top scoring threats in junior Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and sophomore Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME). Katz was third on the team with 19 points (7 goals, 5 assists). She has 52 career points (18 goals, 16 assists). Gildart made the All-NAC First Team after scoring 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists).

The other returning starters are seniors Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH) and Danielle Smith (Fort Washington, PA), junior Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA), and sophomore Audrey Kelton (Wilder, VT).

Western New England College has a solid goalie in junior Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) who compiled a 77.3 save percentage last year along with two shutouts.

Guay, Brown , and senior Amanda Graff (Centerreach, NY) will serve as the team tri-captains.

Western New England College opens its 24th season at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 1, at Keene State. The Golden Bears will meet Eastern Connecticut in the opening round of the Zenaty Invitational hosted by Springfield College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4.

Items of Interest: Field hockey is among the most improved teams at Western New England College. NINE GOLDEN BEARS NAMED TO 2003 NFHCA DIVISION III ACADEMIC TEAM

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Feb. 24, 2004) Ñ The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) named nine Western New England College players to its 2003 Academic Team on Tuesday.

They were seniors Nicole DeRosa (Utica, NY), Psychology, and Bethany Fleck (Somers, CT), Psychology; juniors Sarah Cunningham (LaGrangeville, NY), Math, and Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH), English.

Also, sophomores Kaitlin Boyd (Coram, NY), Government, and Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY), Marketing, and freshmen Melissa Ezold (York, ME), Psychology, Monique Hammith (Westbrook, ME), Pharmacy, and Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT), Business.

DeRosa, a team co-captain, and Fleck each made the honor team for the fourth consecutive year while Cunningham gained her third straight award for academic excellence.

To earn a spot on the NFHCA Academic Team, a player must be a starter or important reserve, and have a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade-point-average in her major.

In addition, the NFHCA recognized Western New England College for having a 3.3 or better team grade-point-average.

Western New England College, under first-year coach Sarah Kelly posted a 9-11 record last fall and advanced to the semifinals of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament.

Jameson, a business major, led the Golden Bears in scoring with 26 points (10 goals, 6 assists) this fall. She had the game-winning goal in overtime in a 2-1 victory at Husson College (Maine) in a quarterfinal game of the NAC Tournament.

Jameson was among four Golden Bears selected to the All-NAC squad earning first team honors with freshman midfielder Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) who compiled 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists) in her first season.

Junior defender Sarah Cunningham (LaGrangeville, NY) made the All-NAC second team while senior forward Nicole DeRosa (Utica, NY) received an All-NAC honorable mention.

Cunningham helped anchor the Golden Bears defense that recorded four shutouts while allowing only 1.85 goals a game.

DeRosa, a team co-captain, was second on the squad in scoring with 23 points (11 goals, 1 assist).

Gildart and sophomore goalie Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) were selected to the NAC All-Tournament Team.

The Golden Bears (9-10) avenged an earlier 3-2 loss to the Braves in overtime at Golden Bear Stadium on October 5.

Coach Sarah Kelly's team was 3-8 in one-goal games this season, including 1-3 in overtime contests.

She had a career high three goals, including the game-winner in overtime, in a 4-3 victory over Elmira College. DeRosa also scored twice in a 4-1 win over Regis College. SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior co-captain Nicole DeRosa (Utica, NY) scored a career high three goals, including the game-winner with 7:35 remaining in overtime, to lift Western New England College to a 4-3 victory over visiting Elmira College in the first meeting between the schools.

DeRosa, who scored twice in a 4-1 win over Regis on Wednesday, leads the Golden Bears in scoring with eight goals (16 points).

WNEC (5-7) previously had lost six games by a single goal this fall, including three in overtime. The Golden Bears led 3-1 at half-time before the Eagles came back to tie the game with two second-half goals.

FARMINGTON, Maine — Sophomore Megan Cloutier (Greenfield, MA) had the game-winning goal with 26:19 remaining in the game to lead Western New England College to a 1-0 victory over defending North Atlantic Conference (NAC) champion Maine-Farmington.

It was the first collegiate goal for Cloutier who has bounced back from a knee injury suffered during the softball season.

Freshman Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) had the assist while sophomore Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) made four saves in gaining the shutout.

Western New England College improves its record to 3-4 with its second consecutive victory.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Seniors Nicole DeRosa (Utica, NY) and Whitney Boucher (Tyngsboro, MA) scored goals in a 36-second span late in the first half as Western New England College snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory over Endicott College.

The four goals were a season high for rookie coach Sarah Kelly's squad.

The win also was the first ever in six meetings for WNEC against Endicott. The Golden Bears had previously dropped four of the five contests in overtime.

WNEC (2-4) took a 4-0 lead on goals by sophomores Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Omojola Hebron (Gaithersburg, MD) midway through the second half.

The goals by DeRosa, Boucher, and Katz were their first of the season; it was the first collegiate goal for Hebron.

Freshman Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) contributed two assists while freshman Melissa Ezold (York, ME) finished with eight saves. Senior Wendy Szafranowicz (South Hadley, MA) played a strong defensive game.

CASTLETON, Vt. — Castleton State College scored 10:12 into overtime to take a 2-1 victory over Western New England College.

Junior Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH) gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead with with her first goal of the season at the 9:12 mark of the opening half. Freshman Audrey Kelton (Wilder, VT) had the assist for her first collegiate point.

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. — Mount Holyoke College opened its home season with a 3-0 victory over Western New England College in a non-conference game.

MHC scored its first goal following one of its 31 corners and extended the lead to 2-0 at intermission. The Lyons also had a 16-3 advantage in shots.

Freshman Melissa Ezold (York, ME) compiled 10 saves for the Golden Bears who fell to 1-3 after their third straight defeat.

Trailing 2-0, WNEC pulled within a goal on a score by Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) with 20:01 remaining in the game. The Sharks kept the Golden Bears off the board with strong defense down the stretch

Junior Tiffany Collins (Elliot, ME) finished with eight saves for Simmons (2-1) while freshman Melissa Ezold (York, ME) played a solid game with 12 stops for WNEC (1-1).

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Freshman Allison jameson (Brattleboro, VT) scored two goals in her collegiate debut and Sarah Kelly made a successful debut as head coach as Western New England College opened its season with a 3-0 victory over Westfield State College.

Freshman Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) gave the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead with a goal on the first shot of her collegiate career at the 25:10 mark of the opening half.

Junior Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH) had assists on both of Jameson's goals. Sophomore Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) compiled seven saves in 60 minutes.

YOUNG GOLDEN BEARS TEAM CHALLENGES FOR NORTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE TITLE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College's field hockey team will have a young look in 2003 with 10 freshmen and six sophomores on the 25-player roster.

WNEC posted a12-10 record last fall that was a school record for wins and placed second in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament for the first time.

Although All-NAC performers Kara Acken (school's all-time leading scorer with 92 points) and Teresa DeLuca (top defender) graduated, first-year coach Sarah Kelly has one of the best players in the region in sophomore Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) who led the Golden Bears in scoring as a rookie with 33 points (11 goals, 11 assists) in gaining all-conference recognition.

WNEC also returns a couple of experienced performers in senior Nicole DeRosa (Utica, NY) who compiled 14 points (6 goals, 2 assists) and junior Adrienne Guay (Enfield, CT) who tallied 12 points (5 goals, 2 assists).

DeRosa and senior Whitney Boucher (Tyngsboro, MA) will serve as the team co-captains.

The Golden Bears have a solid goalie in sophomore Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) who compiled a respectable 85.5 save percentage and had a 1.64 goals-against-average in her rookie season.

Freshmen Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) and Allison Jameson (Brattleboro, VT) could make an immediate impact.

"We're looking forward to another successful season and getting a shot at winning the NAC Tournament title," said Kelly.

SARAH KELLY NAMED NEW FIELD HOCKEY COACH AT WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Aug. 12, 2003) — Sarah Kelly has been named the new field hockey coach at Western New England College, athletics director Mike Theulen announced Tuesday (Aug. 12). She succeeds Aimee Klepacki who is expecting her first baby later this month. Klepacki will remain as the Golden Bears' women's lacrosse coach.

"Sarah will be a welcome addition to our coaching staff," said Theulen. "She has enjoyed tremendous success as a player and coach, and will continue to make our program one of the best in the North Athletic Conference."

A native of Enfield, New Hampshire, Kelly is a 2000 graduate of Springfield College where she earned her bachelor of science degree in athletic training. She was a three-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III All-American and a three-time NFHCA Academic Team selection. Kelly scored 75 points (22 goals, 31 assists) during her four-year career. In May 2002, she received her master of education degree in strength and conditioning at SC.

Kelly joined the Golden Bears athletic staff last September as the College's head strength and conditioning coach, assistant athletic trainer, and Wellness Coordinator. Kelly served as head coach of the Springfield College junior varsity field hockey team in 2001 and recruited several players on the Pride's nationally ranked varsity squad.

Western New England College opens its 23rd season at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 3, at Eastern Connecticut State University.

Last year Western New England College posted a 12-10 record that was a school record for wins and the team's best mark since 1987. The Golden Bears also placed second in the NAC Tournament after finishing fifth in the league during the regular season.

SIX PLAYERS NAMED TO NFHCA DIVISION III ACADEMIC TEAM

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Mar. 18, 2003) — Six Western New England College student-athletes were named Tuesday to the 2002 National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III Academic Team.

They are senior midfielder/attack Kara Acken (Dover Plains, NY), 3.33 grade-point-average, math; junior forwards Bethany Fleck (Somers, CT), 3.79, psychology, Nicole DeRosa (Utica, NY), 3.61, psychology, and Jessica Postoian (Cumberland, RI, 3.75, biology; sophomore sweeper Sarah Cunningham (LaGrangeville, NY), 3.72, math, and freshman defender Kaitlin Boyd (Coram, NY), 3.55, government.

DeRosa, Fleck, and Postoian made the honor squad for the third straight year while Acken and Cunningham gained their second academic award.

To earn a spot on the NFHCA Academic Team, a player must be a starter or important reserve, and have a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade-point-average in her major.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 12, 2002) — Three Western New England players have been selected to the 2002 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) All-Star Team.

Senior midfielder Kara Acken (Dover Plains, NY) and senior defender Teresa DeLucca (Red Hook, NY) made the NAC first team.

This was the third straight year that Acken earned All-NAC recognition. She was third on the team in scoring this past season with 22 points (5 goals, 12 assists). DeLucca ranked among the top defensive players in the region.

Freshman forward Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) was selected to the NAC second team after leading the Golden Bears in scoring with 33 points (11 goals, 11 assists).

All three players also were named to the NAC All-Tournament Team.

Western New England College posted a 12-10 record, which was a school record for wins and the squad's best mark since 1987.

The Golden Bears placed fifth in the conference during the regular season with a 3-2 mark, but placed second in the NAC Tournament. WNEC upset Husson College, Maine (4-3) and defending champion Becker College (1-0) before bowing to the University of Maine-Farmington (5-2) in the championship final.

WATERVILLE, Me. (Nov. 9, 2002)  — University of Maine-Farmington captured the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament crown with a 5-2 victory over Western New England College. The championship final was held at Thomas College in Waterville.

The fifth-seeded Golden Bears fell behind 2-0 in the first half and couldn't catch up. Senior Heather Gaydos (Barre, VT) had the team's first goal with 13:02 remaining in the first half with an assist from sophomore Adrienne Guay (Enfield, NH).

After Maine-Farmington went ahead 3-2, freshman Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) again cut the margin to one with a goal with 15:11 left with an assist from junior Chelsey Perham (Walpole, MA).

Maine-Farmington scored twice down the stretch to seal the title.

Freshmen goalies Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) and Casey Sanford (North Haven, CT) combined for 14 saves as the Golden Bears ended the season with a 12-10 record, the most wins in school history.

LEICESTER, Mass. (Nov. 5, 2002)  — Freshman Alyssa Katz (Cortlandt Manor, NY) scored the game-winner with 2:02 left in the first half with an assist from senior Kara Acken (Dover Plains, NY) as visiting Western New England College upset defending champion and top-seeded Becker College, 1-0, in a semifinal game of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament.

The win was WNEC's first ever over Becker in five meetings and avenged a 1-0 loss against the Hawks on October 5.

Freshman Jillian Brown (Plymouth, MA) made 10 saves for the Golden Bears who entered the tournament as the fifth seed. WNEC is now 12-9, which is a school record for wins in a season.

Western New England College will play in its first NAC Tournament championship game at either second seed Maine-Farmington or third seed Simmons College on Saturday.

Maine-Farmington was scheduled to host Simmons today, but the game was postponed because of six inches of snow in Farmington, Maine. They will attempt to play the contest Thursday.

SENIOR KARA ACKEN HONORED AS THE WNEC FEMALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 5, 2002) — Field hockey standout Kara Acken (Dover Plains, NY) was honored Tuesday as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week.

Acken, a senior midfielder, scored the winning goal in a 4-3 victory over Husson College (Maine) in a quarterfinal game of the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament. The win gave the Golden Bears an 11-9 record, which is a school record for wins in a season, and assured the team of its first winning season since 1987 (10-6-3).

A math major, Acken also was named to the NAC All-Star Team for the third consecutive year.
