Nov. 13, 2004 KAYLEE MARTIN AND ANDREA BENNETT GAIN WEEKLY HONORS SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College freshman Kaylee Martin (Holmes, NY) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Cross-Country Rookie-of-the-Week on Monday (Nov. 1) for the second time this season. Martin was the top freshman finisher and third overall among 78 runners at the conference championship with a time of 21 minutes, 45 seconds over the 5,000-meter course. A marketing/advertising major, she earned All-GNAC recognition for her performance. Freshman Andrea Bennett (Torrington, CT) was honored Tuesday (Nov. 2) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week. Bennett placed seventh among 64 runners at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Cross-Country Championship last Saturday in Nashua, New Hampshire covering the 5,000-meter course in 22 minutes, 13 seconds. Freshman Kaylee Martin (Holmes, NY) was honored Tuesday (Oct. 5) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week. Martin placed first among 62 runners at the WNEC Invitational last Saturday covering the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 29 seconds. With Martin leading the way, Western New England College finished first among seven schools. Martin has been the Golden Bears' top runner in four meets this season. Sept. 6, 2003 JAMIE CARNEY NAMED WNEC COCA-COLA FEMALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-YEAR SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Three-sport standout Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) was honored as the WNEC Coca-Cola Female Athlete-of-the-Year at the school's Spring Sports Banquet on May 4, 2003. Carney, a biology major, was a team captain in basketball and cross-country, and among the top players on the lacrosse team. The cross-country program is only four years old and Carney was the only four-year runner on the team. In basketball, she led the Golden Bears to an 18-10 record and the championship finals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament for the first time in school history. A four-year starter at forward, she was second on the team in scoring (12.5 avg.) and first in rebounding (10.5) in gaining All-GNAC First Team honors. Carney finished her career second in rebounding (948) and eighth in scoring (1,165 points). In lacrosse, Carney was a repeat selection on the All-New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) First Team. She scored 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) from her defensive position and finished her three-year career with 55 points (32-23). Western

Western New England College's women's cross country team finished 11th among 21 teams at the Gordon "Pop Crowell" Invitational Saturday (Sept. 22) in Wenham, Massachusetts. Freshman Lisa Marold (West Warwick, RI) placed 31st among 165 runners with a time of 22 minutes, 32 seconds. Junior Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) was 32nd in 22:37. WNEC will host its own Invitational starting at 10;30 a.m. Saturday, October 6. News from the 2000 Season GOLDEN BEARS WINS GNAC CHAMPIONSHIP NASHUA, N.H. (Oct. 28, 2000) In only its second year of varsity competition, Western New England College captured the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Cross Country Championship Saturday with 44 points. Johnson & Wales University was second (61) followed by Saint Joseph College, Connecticut (100), Emerson College (101), Norwich University (107), host Rivier College (133), Southern Vermont College (143), and Pine Manor College (232). Western New England freshman Leticia DeFazio (Reno, NV) was the individual winner among 62 runners covering the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 27 seconds. DeFazio earned All-Conference recognition along with sophomore Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) who was third (21:33), junior Jennifer Bonomo (Beacon, NY), eighth (22:42), and freshman Erika Anderson (Tolland, CT), 10th (22:48). (Oct. 17, 2000) Western New England College freshman Leticia DeFazio (Reno, NV) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Cross Country Rookie-of-the-Week on Tuesday (Oct. 17). (Oct. 10, 2000) Freshman Leticia DeFazio (Reno, NV) of the women's cross country squad was honored Tuesday (Oct. 10) as the Western New England College Female Athlete-of-the-Week. DeFazio placed first among 34 runners at the WNEC Invitational on October 7 covering the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 25 seconds. With DeFazio leading the way, WNEC placed first among the five schools competing in the race. She has been the Golden Bears' top runner in five meets this fall. (Sept. 7, 2000) Western New England College begins its second season of women's cross country hoping to improve on last year's fifth place showing at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship. Coach Brian Walsh welcomes back three veterans along with six promising newcomers. Heading the list of returnees are sophomore co-captains Lindsay Barnes (Ware, MA) and Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA). Freshman Leticia DeFazio (Reno, NV) will make an immediate impact along with classmate Erika Anderson (Tolland, CT), senior Linda Dutches (Wayne, NJ), and juniors Jennifer Bonomo (Beacon, NY), Ann Forcum (Ludlow, MA), Kelly Goodyear (Meriden, CT), and Beth Szymanski (Burlington, CT). The Golden Bears will participate in eight meets this fall with the GNAC Championship scheduled for Saturday, October 28, in Manchester, New Hampshire.
