Western New England College JAMIE CARNEY NAMED WNEC COCA-COLA FEMALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-YEAR SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Three-sport standout Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) was honored as the WNEC Coca-Cola Female Athlete-of-the-Year at the school's Spring Sports Banquet on May 4, 2003. Carney, a biology major, was a team captain in basketball and cross-country, and among the top players on the lacrosse team. The cross-country program is only four years old and Carney was the only four-year runner on the team. In basketball, she led the Golden Bears to an 18-10 record and the championship finals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament for the first time in school history. A four-year starter at forward, she was second on the team in scoring (12.5 avg.) and first in rebounding (10.5) in gaining All-GNAC First Team honors. Carney finished her career second in rebounding (948) and eighth in scoring (1,165 points). In lacrosse, Carney was a repeat selection on the All-New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) First Team. She scored 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) from her defensive position and finished her three-year career with 55 points (32-23). Western

Basketball SENIOR JAMIE CARNEY AND FRESHMAN LISA MASELLA NAMED TO ALL-GNAC TEAM SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Mar. 17, 2003) Senior forward Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) and freshman center Lisa Masella (Newtown, CT) were named Monday (Mar. 17) to the 2003 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Basketball Team. Carney, a biology major, made the All-GNAC First Team after averaging 12.5 points (second on the team) and 10.5 rebounds (first). She scored in double figures 19 times and had 11 double-doubles (points-rebounds). Carney had career highs of 31 points against Fitchburg State College and 28 rebounds vs. Saint Joseph College (Conn.). A team tri-captain, Carney finished her career with 1,165 points (seventh on the school's all-time list) and 948 rebounds (second all-time). She was an All-GNAC Second Team selection her sophomore year. Masella, a psychology major, led the Golden Bears in scoring (13.8 avg.) and was second in rebounding (8.6) in gaining a spot on the All-GNAC Second Team. She also led the squad in field-goal percentage (52.2). Masella scored in double figures 20 times and compiled eight double-doubles. She posted season highs of 26 points against Emmanuel College and 19 rebounds against Daniel Webster College. Western New England College posted an 18-10 record that was the third highest win total in the program's 27-year history. The Golden Bears also recorded their 300th all-time victory against Simmons College. Black, a guard, averaged 13 points and 2.8 rebounds in three Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament games. She had a game high 20 points and six steals in a 76-63 win over Simmons College and 17 points in a 74-71 overtime victory against Albertus Magnus College. A marketing communications and advertising major, Black averaged 10.0 points and 3.2 rebounds this past season and was among the top defensive players in the region. Senior guard Katie Corey (Perth Amboy, NJ) came off the bench to score a game high 16 points and senior forward (and tournament MVP) Julia Demirer (Frederick, MD) added 14 points and six rebounds as Emmanuel College won its third straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament title with a 65-41 win over Western New England College. Senior guard Heather Gaydos (Barre, VT) hit a three-pointer that broke a 67-67 tie in overtime and senior forward Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) had 20 points and 18 rebounds as third-seeded (and host) Western New England College upset second-seeded Albertus Magnus College, 74-71, in overtime in a semifinal game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament. The Golden Bears (18-9) rallied from a 59-51 deficit with 4:17 remaining in regulation by scoring 11 straight points for a 62-59 lead on Carney's three-point play with 31 seconds left. Albertus Magnus (16-8) sent the game into the extra session when freshman guard Desiree Dixon (West Haven, CT) heaved up a three-pointer that banked off the glass into the bottom of the net as the buzzer expired. The Golden Bears, the third seed, also received solid efforts from senior forward Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) who contributed 19 points with seven rebounds and freshman center Lisa Masella (Newtown, CT) who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. A senior forward, Carney scored 13 points and pulled down a game high 12 rebounds to lead Western New England College to a 62-49 victory over Norwich University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest. Carney also became the eighth player in WNEC history to pass the 1,000-point mark. She scored her historic basket on a lay-up with 11:16 remaining in the first half. Carney now has 1,010 career points. Coach Wendy Davis made a successful return home as Western New England College rallied late in the game for a 50-47 victory over Albright College in the first meeting between the schools. Davis, who grew up in nearby Birdsboro and later starred at the University of Connecticut, had a lot of relatives and friends on hand to watch the Golden Bears improve their record to 5-3. Playing for the first time in a month, WNEC trailed 45-42 with 1:27 left in the game. Freshman center Lisa Masella (Newtown, CT) made a pair of free throws, senior forward Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) nailed a jumper, and junior guard Emily Sward (Plainville, CT) sank two charity shots with 20 seconds remaining for the win. Carney finished with a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) while Masella added 14 points and six 'boards.
