ERIN MARINO RECEIVES FIRST COCA-COLA FEMALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-YEAR AWARD

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Senior basketball captain Erin Marino (Westerly, RI — Westerly High School) received the first Western New England College Coca-Cola Female Athlete-of-the-Year Award at the school's Spring Sports Banquet May 5.

Marino, a 5-6 guard, was a three-year captain for the Golden Bears who ended her career as the school's fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,327 points. This past season Marino was second on the squad in scoring (11.0 avg.) and the team leader in free-throw percentage (81.0), assists (82), steals (68), and blocked shots (12).

A finance major, Marino was selected to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Star First Team. She also played in the Senior All-Star Classic that was held in conjunction with the NCAA Division III Final Four Championship in Danbury, Connecticut.

Western New England posted a 16-10 record this past season for its second straight 16-win campaign under second-year coach (and former UConn standout) Wendy Davis. The Golden Bears also finished in a three-way tie for second place in the conference with a 10-2 mark.

ERIN MARINO AND JAMIE CARNEY NAMED TO GNAC ALL-STAR TEAM

By TOM EMBERLEY '01

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College senior Erin Marino (Westerly, RI — Westerly High School) and sophomore Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA — Nauset Regional High School) were both named to the 2001 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Basketball All-Star Team on Tuesday (Feb. 27).

Marino was selected to the GNAC First Team while Carney was voted to the GNAC Second Team.

Marino, a 5-6 shooting guard, served as a co-captain during her final three seasons at Western New England College. A consistent performer for the Golden Bears, she was a major reason why the squad posted a 16-10 record for its second straight 16-win season under second-year coach Wendy Davis. The Golden Bears also finished in a three-way tie for second place in the conference with a 10-2 mark.

Marino was the team leader in free throw percentage (.810), assists (82), blocks (12) and steals (68). The finance major was second on the team in scoring average (11.0), and finished her illustrious career as WNEC's fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,327 points.

Marino's career ended last Saturday (Feb. 17) when the Golden Bears fell to No. 16 Emmanuel College, 80-65, in the GNAC Tournament semifinals at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. Her best collegiate game was her last game, earning GNAC All-Tournament Team honors after tossing in a season and game-high 25 points with six steals against the NCAA Division III Tournament-bound Saints in her home state.

WNEC head coach Wendy Davis said that Marino "is the heart and soul of this team. (After Marino's Emmanuel showing), she deserves to be on the First Team without a doubt in my mind."

Carney, a 5-10 forward, has become an exceptional go-to player who will look to pick up the scoring slack left by Marino's loss next season.

A three-sport athlete who finished in third-place last fall at the GNAC Women's Cross Country Championship, Carney led the Golden Bears in scoring this season with an 11.9 points per game average. The biology major also led the team with a .425 field goal percentage and an 8.2 rebounds per game average.

Having compiled 542 points and 454 rebounds in her first 51 collegiate games, Carney, who will play women's lacrosse this spring for the first time, has a realistic chance of becoming the first player in school history with 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Coach Davis said that Carney "played very well for us this year. Without her scoring and defense in the post, we would not have won many games."

GOLDEN BEARS FALL TO EMMANUEL IN GNAC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College didn't back down in its Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament semifinal game against No. 16 Emmanuel College, but couldn't overcome foul trouble and rebounding problems against the taller Saints who posted an 80-65 victory at the Recreation Harborside Recreation Center at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I.

Senior guard and team co-captain Erin Marino (Westerly, RI) was brillant in her final game scoring a season high 25 points with six steals, and four rebounds. Sophomore guard Lindsey Black (Bernardston, MA) added 10 points for the Golden Bears (16-10) who finished with their second straight 16-win season under second-year Coach Wendy Davis.

WNEC sophomore forward and leading scorer Jamie Carney picked up two fouls in the opening 30 seconds and her third foul at the 14:14 mark forcing Davis to utilize a smaller, but quicker lineup. The move paid off as the Golden Bears rallied from an early seven-point deficit to take a 26-24 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Joyce Neilson (Salisbury, CT) with 4:12 left in the opening half.

Emmanuel, however, ran off nine straight points for a 33-26 halftime advantage.

The Saints (24-2) appeared to have things in control with a 51-35 lead with 12:18 left in the game before Western New England pulled within nine at 67-58 after another Neilson three-pointer with 2:47 remaining in the contest. But Neilson and Marino each fouled out in the final 1:09 to end the upset bid.

Junior guard Brianne Bognanno led three Emmanuel players scoring in double figures with 18 points while also pulling down 12 rebounds. The Saints, with four players in the lineup over six feet, held a commanding 50-22 advantage off the boards.

FORMER UCONN STAR WENDY DAVIS FINDS SUCCESS IN COACHING AT WNEC

By KEVIN HASSETT '02

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Feb. 12, 2001) -- Former University of Connecticut standout Wendy Davis has a lot to be happy about in just her second season as head coach of the women's basketball team at Western New England College.

Entering the final week of the regular season, Western New England has a 12-9 record that includes an 8-2 mark for third place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). The Golden Bears had an eight-game winning streak in December and January following a difficult non-league schedule.

Perhaps the most memorable games of the season for Davis were the two contests against former UConn teammates Kathy Bantley of Elms College (Mass.) on December 9 and Debby Baer Fiske of Saint Joseph College (Conn.) on January 13. Baer also was Davis' roommate during their college days.

Davis (a 1992 UConn graduate), Bantley, and Baer Fiske are among six UConn alumni serving as women's basketball coaches. Jennifer Rizzotti is the head coach at the University of Hartford while Kris Lamb is the head coach at Marist College. Carla Berube is an assistant coach at Providence College.

"It's was fun coaching against Kathy and Debbie because we get to see each other often which a lot of former teammates don't get a chance to do," says Davis. "It's good too because we have the same perspective on the game and we are better able to share scouting reports on other teams."

What also makes things fun for Davis is that WNEC had convincing victories over both Elms and Saint Joseph this season. The margin of victory is not a top priority for Davis, however. There have been a couple of instances where Davis and the Golden Bears have shown mercy to their opponents. Last year, with the game already in hand with 3 1/2 minutes left, and her friend Bantley in trouble with no timeouts and an exhausted and injury-riddled squad, Davis called a timeout for her opponents to give them a break.

Another display of good sportsmanship that did not go unnoticed by one spectator came following a lopsided victory at Southern Vermont College on January 20. Southern Vermont is winless this season and has been blown out in every game. Davis pulled her starters 10 minutes into the contest and forced her team to pass the ball five times before shooting, even on potential fast breaks. After the game, Southern Vermont president Barbara Pickard Sirvis stopped by the WNEC bench and personally thanked the coaches and players for not running up the score.

"We were just being professional," Davis stated. "I would expect the same thing from another team if we were on the other end." Davis also has reason to be happy with the work ethic of her players this season. "They seem to be more focused and are practicing with more intensity," she notes. "I think a lot of it has to do with the leadership of Erin Marino."

Marino, a senior co-captain from Westerly, Rhode Island, is the team leader both on and off the court. The 5'6" guard is second on the team in scoring (10.5 average), and first in assists (3.1), steals (2.5), blocked shots (0.4), and free-throw percentage (83.9). Last year she led the team in scoring with a 16.7 average. Entering the final week of the regular season, Marino is fifth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,263 points

Other key contributors include sophomore center Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA), the team's leading scorer (12.1) and rebounder (7.9), sophomore guard Lindsey Black (Bernardston, MA) who is third in scoring (7.9), and freshman guard Krista Savard (Fairfield, CT) who has given the Golden Bears a spark off the bench. "These players have really done well this season," Davis noted.

Last year Davis directed her team to a 16-9 record, which was the school's fifth highest total in its 24-year history. The Golden Bears finished seventh in the GNAC with a 7-5 mark.

Davis enjoyed an outstanding career at UConn where she still ranks seventh on the Huskies all-time scoring list (1552 points). She also is first all-time in three-point percentage (43.9%) and three-pointers made (279). The Huskies posted a 101-28 record for a 78.3 winning percentage during her career. She also played on the Huskies' Final Four squad in 1991.

Davis also is a former Big East Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year and NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship recipient. She was named to the Big East All-Star Team on two occasions and was a two-time GTE Academic All-America Team honoree. Davis earned her master of science degree in education at UConn and served as an assistant coach for the Huskies under Geno Auriemma during the 1993-94 season.

WNEC FACES TOUGHEST GNAC TEST OF THE SEASON THURSDAY AT EMMANUEL

By TOM EMBERLEY '01

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Winners of eight straight (tied for the third-longest streak in school history), the Western New England College women's basketball team (9-6, 5-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) faces its biggest test of the season Thursday night (Jan. 25) against GNAC favorite Emmanuel College (14-2, 5-0 GNAC) in Boston.

"Though both teams are undefeated in the GNAC, (Emmanuel) is ranked second in New England, which automatically makes us the underdogs," said second-year Golden Bears head coach Wendy Davis. "I like being the underdog, though, because we have absolutely nothing to lose."

The final game in WNEC's four-game road swing is scheduled to tip-off at 7 p.m.

The Golden Bears are 4-5 all-time against the Saints. Emmanuel has won the last three meetings between the two schools, including twice last season (78-73 at the Alumni Healthful Living Center on Feb. 1, 2000, and 87-63 in Boston in the first round of last year's GNAC Tournament on Feb. 23).

WNEC's last victory over Emmanuel came during the 1994-95 season, when then-coach Tony Williams led his squad to a 70-65 overtime victory over the Saints.

Golden Bears Notebook

All of WNEC's nine victories this season have been by at least 15 points... Through the Daniel Webster game, the Golden Bears have shot 70.9% from the charity stripe as a team, with six of the team's regular contributors shooting better than 70%... With her 12-point performance against Southern Vermont, senior co-captain Erin Marino (Westerly, R.I.) moved into seventh-place (1,192) on the school's all-time scoring list, surpassing the former mark of 1,180 points, held by Jennifer DeForest (1989-93). With her current 9.9 points per game average, Marino could easily move past Yovanna Brown (1984-1987) as the school's fourth-leading scorer, though reaching Donna Blackburn's (1982-85) third-leading 1,552 points is highly unlikey... Sophomore forward Jamie Carney (Orleans, Mass.) continues to leave her mark across the GNAC. Having reached double-digits in scoring in 10 of the Golden Bears' 15 games thus far, the January 22 GNAC Player of the Week leads the team in both scoring (12.2 points per game), field goal percentage (46.8%) and rebounding (7.8 rebounds per game)... The "X Factor" for Davis has been sophomore guard Lindsey Black (Bernardston, Mass.). Though she boasts a 9.2 points per game average, Black's defensive play has been just as impressive, as she leads the team with 32 steals.

The next women's home game will be Thursday, February 1, when the Golden Bears welcome Springfield College to the AHLC for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 7, 2000) – Western New England College's women's basketball team hopes to challenge for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament title this season with four starters among the nine returning players.

Last year the Golden Bears posted a 16-9 record under rookie coach Wendy Davis, which was the team's fifth highest win total in 24 years. Western New England placed seventh in the conference with a 7-5 mark.

Heading the list of returnees is 5'6" senior guard Erin Marino (Westerly, RI – Westerly High School) who was the squad's top scorer with a 16.7 average. She also was second on the team in assists (3.4 avg.) and third in rebounding (5.1). Marino is eighth on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,043 points.

Western New England also return junior guard Joyce Neilson (Salisbury, CT – Housatonic High School), sophomore guard Lindsey Black (Bernardston, MA – Pioneer High School), and sophomore forward Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA – Nauset High School).

Davis, a native of Birdsboro, Pennsylvania, is a 1992 graduate of the University of Connecticut where she was a four-year starter at shooting guard for the Huskies. COACH WENDY DAVIS AND PLAYERS
VISIT DUGGAN MIDDLE SCHOOL

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Oct. 4, 2000) – Western New England College women's basketball coach Wendy Davis, sophomore forward Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA), and freshman guard Elizabeth Whitaker (Glens Falls, NY) spoke to 40 Duggan Middle School youngsters on Wednesday about making smart choices in life.

Carney and Whitaker talked about their high school careers and how they had to complete their homework before they could play sports. The players also mentioned how important it was to acquire time-management skills to help them pursue their athletic careers.

Davis recalled the time she had to take a geography test the morning before playing in the 1991 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Final Four Tournament semifinal game when she attended the University of Connecticut.

"We enjoyed visiting with these youngsters because we wanted to share some of our experiences with them," said Davis who is in her second year at Western New England. "These kids realize that they are in school to receive an education first and that sports come second."

Golden Bears Qualify for GNAC Playoffs

First year head coach Wendy Davis guided her team to a 16-9 record in 1999-2000, the most for a WNEC women's basketball team in five years. The Golden Bears qualified for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament, losing a first-round game to Emmanuel College.

Junior guard Erin Marino (Westerly, RI) had the best year of her career, averaging 16.7 points a game. She also became the eighth player in school history to score 1000 career points. Erin also led the team in steals and was second on the team in assists.

Sophomore Joyce Neilson (Salisbury, CT) led the team in assists, while averaging nine points per game. The story of the season was the emergence of three freshmen that put should put the program on solid footing for years to come.

A trio of freshmen made big impacts this year, and served notice to the GNAC that WNEC will be a tougher opponent in the years to come. Lindsey Black (Bernardston, MA) was second on the team in scoring at 13.1 points per game and was second in rebounding. Jamie Carney (Orleans, MA) led the Golden Bears on the boards, averaging 9.7 per contest. Alexis Fibble (Cornwell, NY) came on strong at the end of the season, moving into the starting lineup by year's end.
