RYAN EMERSON '05 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College women's basketball junior guard tri-captain Jess Harrica (Morrisonville, NY) has had a tough time watching from the sidelines after suffering a season ending injury in a pre-season practice. Last November 15, Harrica tore her Achilles tendon doing what comes naturally to her, making a hustle play. She endured surgery just a week later and is still rehabilitating trying to regain her strength and mobility. "This has been the hardest thing I have ever had to go through in my life, but luckily I have had a great support system from my teammates, coaches, friends, and family," says Harrica. Harrica started all 26 games last year and led the team in assists (116) and steals (51). She was also named WNEC Defensive Player-ofÐtheÐYear for her tenacious, in your face, style of play. Harrica had displayed her leadership on and off the court last year and was rewarded this year by becoming a tri-captain. However, her leadership is even more important because she is on the sideline. Despite her injury Harrica remains positive offering advice and support at games and practices. Senior forward tri-captain Shelley Everson says, "Jess is always right there at practice with us. She gives the guards and everyone pointers about what she sees from the sidelines. She really knows the game and has been like another coach to us." Harrica says, that her biggest disappointment is that "I cannot lead the team on the floor and be out there to help my teammates, especially on defense. The girls stay motivated by themselves, but I try to help them with things I see from the sidelines that they may not necessarily see. These girls work their butts off everyday, and I try to keep them positive when they get down on themselves." The Golden Bears have had a successful year thus far, compiling a 14-5 record and 7-1 mark in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) entering a game February 10 at Simmons College in Boston. Although Harrica would love to be on the court with her teammates, she says, "It's really hard to watch from the sidelines because this is something I love and I have always worked hard for; however, it is a lot more fun to watch us win then it is to watch us lose.Ó Everson added, "Jess is one of the most conditioned and athletic people I have ever met. Her rehab is and will continue to go smoothly. She'll be back on the court in no time and I can't wait to come back and watch. This team is going to be great next year." Tuesday,
