Mayhew Lori Mayhew is starting her eighth season as the head softball coach at Western New England College in 2004. She has a 146-84-1 record for a remrakable 63.4 winning percentage. Mayhew led her team to a record-breaking season in 2003 as the Golden Bears were ranked 10th in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III poll. This was the highest ranking ever by any Western New England College team in any sport. WNEC compiled a 32-7 record for its second straight 30-win campaign, repeated as Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament champions, and captured its first NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship. Western New England College then made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III Final Eight Championship in Salem, Virginia. In 2002, Mayhew led the Golden Bears to a 34-9-1 record, which was a school record for wins and the most victories ever by a WNEC team in a season. WNEC also placed first in the conference during the regular season with a 20-3-1 mark and captured its first GNAC Tournament title. Western New England College made its inaugural appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament an historic one by winning one of three contests, becoming the first College team ever to win an event in national competition. Mayhew was selected the 2002 GNAC Coach-of-the-Year. In 2001, Mayhew guided Western New England College to a 22-9 record for the squad's second straight 20-win campaign. WNEC also placed second in the GNAC West Division with a 14-3 mark, advanced to the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament, and participated in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Tournament for the first time since 1992. Mayhew directed her team to a 21-13 record in 2000, which was the program's first 20-win season in nine years. Western New England College just missed advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament after placing second in the 2000 GNAC Tournament following a 3-2 loss to Saint Joseph College (Conn.) in the championship game. Mayhew served as an associate head coach at Western New England in 1996 before being named head coach in 1997. Mayhew earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration at Western New England and a master of science degree in sport management at Springfield College. She also serves as the equipment supervisor at Western New England College. In September 2001, Mayhew was inducted into the Downes Athletic Hall of Fame. Mayhew, a native of Westfield, hit a school record .485 her senior season and finished her career with a .403 average, also a WNEC all-time best. A third baseman, she was a two-time Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Division III and Northeast Women's Athletic Conference (NEWAC) All-Star selection. |
