(Aug. 19, 2004) Former Western New England College captain Mike Raymond has been named assistant men's and women's tennis coach at Allegheny College (Pa.). Allegheny is a private co-educational college in Northwestern Pennsylvania with an enrollment of 2,000 undergraduate students. The Gators are a NCAA Division III institution and members of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC). Raymond will be working under second year head coach Jared Luteran who has been given the task of rebuilding both men's and women's programs. A native of Vernon, Connecticut, Raymond ranks among the top players in Golden Bears' men's tennis history. He compiled a 86-24 record (78.2%) that is a school record for career wins. He earned his bachelor of science degree in sport management in 2002 and master of science degree in business administration this summer. Raymond also was the first student athlete in Western New England College history to serve on the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He also served as an assistant coach of the WNEC men's and women's tennis teams for two seasons. The Golden Bears men finished first in the GNAC Tournament in 2003 and second this past spring while the women won their first ever GNAC Tournament title in 2003. As a senior, Raymond was voted the WNEC Male Co-Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year, the team's Most Valuable Player, and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player-of-the-Year. He compiled a 26-5 record (83.8%) and won both the No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles title at the GNAC Tournament as the Golden Bears won their first ever conference tournament title. Raymond posted a 24-5 mark in 2001 and captured the No. 2 singles title at the GNAC Tournament. He also received his second Coach Phillip Sweeney Team Leadership Award. He was the squad's MVP in 2000. Raymond served as president of the WNEC Sport Management Association, and was a member of the Delta Mu Delta Business Honor Society and School of Business Dean's List. He has received several academic accolades, including the Presidential Scholars Award. Raymond was a three-time GNAC Academic Team selection and a candidate for the national College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Team. He also worked as a student assistant in the athletic communications office. Raymond is a 1998 graduate of Rockville High School where he was captain of the boys' tennis team and a Central Connecticut Conference East All-Star. He was the state boys' singles badminton champion in 1997 and the recipient of the school's Senior Athletic Award. DOUG PEARSON NAMED MEN'S TENNIS COACH AND COORDINATOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION Jennifer Kolins remains as women's tennis coach and assumes new role of CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College president Dr. Anthony S. Caprio announced May 17 that Doug Pearson will become the new men's tennis coach and coordinator of physical education. Dr. Caprio also announced that Mike Theulen will succeed Pearson as men's basketball coach while continuing as the school's director of athletics. In another coaching change, men and women's tennis coach Jennifer Kolins will become one of the College's new CHAMPS/Life Skill Coordinators with assistant director of athletics Cynthia Costanzo. Kolins will continue as the women's tennis coach. Pearson led the Golden Bears to a 100-60 record (62.5%) in six years, including two appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament. He inherited a program that had a losing record for eight straight seasons and quickly turned the Golden Bears into a winner with a 14-11 mark in 1998-99 that was the institution's most wins in nine years. Pearson guided the Golden Bears to back-to-back 20-win seasons and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament titles in 2000 and 2001. He led his teams to five consecutive winning seasons from 1998-2003. The Golden Bears posted a 12-14 record this past winter after losing two 1,000-point scorers (forward Kris Hebert and guard Mike O'Connor) from the previous season. Pearson has the highest winningest percentage (62.5%) in men's basketball at the College. For the past three seasons, Pearson has served as the chairman of the GNAC Men's Basketball Committee. He was the 2000 GNAC Coach-of-the-Year. Pearson, a native of Manchester, CT, has an overall record of 291-189 (60.6%) in 21 years as a head basketball coach on the high school and college levels. During that time, his teams won seven conference championships. In addition to his success on the court, Pearson and his teams have been active in numerous community projects, including Habitat for Humanity, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Dream to Read program, and Coaches vs. Cancer clinics. Prior to joining the Western New England College staff, Pearson spent eight years as an assistant and associate coach at Springfield College under Theulen, who was the head basketball coach there at the time. Pearson also served as the coordinator of physical education for the Manchester (CT) Public School system for 15 years. "This was a tough decision to make after coaching basketball as an assistant and head coach for 32 years," said Pearson. "I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching at Western New England College and look forward to my new duties." Kolins posted a 40-18 record (69.0 winning percentage) as men's tennis coach the past four seasons, including an 8-8 mark this spring. Her teams captured GNAC Tournament titles in 2002 and 2003. Kolins was named the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year in 2002 and 2003. For the past year, Kolins has served as the athletics department Community Outreach Coordinator. When Western New England College became a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) CHAMPS/Life Skills institution this spring, Kolins took on the added responsibility as a program coordinator with Costanzo. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program supports efforts of student-athletes toward intellectual development and graduation, encourages the development of leadership skills, promotes respect for diversity, encourages a commitment for community service, and prepares student-athletes for life after graduation. "We are all very excited about the potential impact of our CHAMPS/Life Skills Program," said Theulen. "Having such talented professionals on our staff made these changes necessary as our athletics program continues to grow." SOPHOMORE ED FALLON NAMED WNEC MALE ATHLETE-OF-THE-WEEK SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Mar. 10, 2003 Singles Doubles YOUNG GOLDEN BEARS LOOK TO DEFEND GREAT NORTHEAST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (GNAC) TITLE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Western New England College's men's tennis team hopes to keep the winning tradition alive this spring with a couple of key veterans and promising newcomers leading the way. WNEC lost three starters from last year's squad that posted a 9-5 record for their 12th consecutive winning season. The Golden Bears tied for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) regular season crown with a 4-1 mark and captured the program's first GNAC Tournament championship. Despite a new look throughout the lineup, third year head coach Jennifer Kolins feels her squad has a good chance to defend its conference title this spring. "Even though we graduated three starters from last year, the players have stepped up and worked harder than ever," Kolins said. "With only three seniors and nine underclassmen, we are young but have the motivation, determination, work ethic, and positive attitudes to repeat and surpass the goals from last year. "The leadership from our seniors has guided this team through its most intensive off-season ever. I am truly delighted to watch our player's commitment, not only to the sport of tennis, but to each other," said Kolins. (Kolins is the first woman to coach a men's team at Western New England College. She has a 20-7 record in two years directing the men's program and was the 2002 GNAC Coach-of-the-Year.) Leading the title defense will be first-year law student and tri-captain Chris Gutwaks (Springfield, MA). Gutwaks will assume full-time number one singles duties after splitting the position last year with former doubles partner Mike Raymond (Vernon, CT) who now serves as the team's graduate assistant coach. Gutwaks compiled a 23-8 record and was a 2002 GNAC All-Tournament performer in singles and doubles. He will be joined at number one doubles by senior tri-captain Tom Michaud (Manchester, CT) who moves up to number two singles after winning 11 of 16 matches at the third slot in 2002. Michaud posted an overall record of 19-12. The Golden Bears also have experienced players in senior tri-captain Aaron DiNoto (Webster, NY), and sophomores Dan Matis (East Lyme, CT) and sophomore Dave Stelmach (Raynham, MA). All three either won a flight at the GNAC Tournament or reached the final. Matis and Stelmach both were selected as GNAC Rookies-of-the-Week last year. A big boost to this year's lineup will be the emergence of freshman Ed Fallon (Springfield, MA). A skilled singles and doubles player, he is expected to make an immediate impact. Sophomores Joe Palombo (Auburn, NY), Matt Carona (Ardsley, NY) and freshmen Greg Kelly (Pembroke, MA), Sterling Scanlon (West Hartford, CT), Brandon Flood (Ballston Spa, NY), and John D'Adonna (Oakville, CT) round out the roster and provide much-needed depth. The Golden Bears will open their season with four matches in the Orlando, Florida area during spring break. The first match is set for Monday, March 10, against Wilmington College (Ohio). The challenging schedule also includes matches against traditional non-conference rivals such as Springfield College, UMass-Dartmouth and Western Connecticut State University. The GNAC season begins on Saturday, March 22nd, when the Golden Bears host 2002 GNAC Tournament runner-up Emerson College. MIKE RAYMOND ATTENDS NCAA LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (May 31, 2002) Mike Raymond of Western New England College was among 282 student-athletes who attended the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference May 26-30 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. The NCAA conference was designed to enhance the student-athletes' leadership and communication skills to help them become more effective leaders. Among the topics discussed were diversity, student-athlete welfare, social behavior, trust among coaches, administrators, and student-athletes, Title IX, NCAA rules, peer pressure, and competition on religious holidays. Raymond, who graduated earlier this month, was the 2002 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament No. 1 singles and doubles champion. GOLDEN BEARS By MIKE RAYMOND '02 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. The 2001 season will go down in the books as the most successful one in team history, but the Golden Bears tennis squad wants more. Last season, the team finished with an 11-2 overall record, which included an undefeated trek through the conference regular season. However, the surging Golden Bears were once again upended in the conference championship tournament, finishing second to Johnson & Wales University. This season, the team returns every impact player with the exception of graduated senior Bryan Hanson (Wantagh, NY), who owns the mantle of winningest player in school history. Leading the team this year are senior co-captains and doubles partners Mike Raymond (Vernon, CT) and Chris Gutwaks (Springfield, MA). The two combined for a 24-6 record at second and third singles, respectively, last year and look to prove just as formidable a tandem at the top two singles positions this season. Other key returning players include seniors Kevin Hassett (Pembroke, MA) and Will Delahanty (Tobyhanna, PA). Juniors Tom Michaud (Manchester, CT) and Aaron DiNoto (Webster, NY) round out the veterans on the squad. This year's team boasts a healthy dose of freshman talent as well, adding to the depth of the lineup. Matt Carona (Ardsley, NY), Joe Palombo (Ballston, NY), Dan Matis (East Lyme, CT), Chris Sorrell (Enfield, CT), and Dave Stelmach (Raynham, MA) will be counted on to carry on the program's winning tradition. Second year head coach Jennifer Kolins says, "During our off-season training, this team exhibited a tremendous work ethic and desire to improve. I know this will carry on throughout the season, which will lead the team to another impressive record, and positive reputation." The season will open on the team's Spring Break trip to Orlando, Florida, where they will face Vassar College and Haverford College in two challenging out of conference matchups. Other key matches include Springfield College, Nichols College, and conference rival Johnson & Wales University.
