Black '87 was among six individuals inducted into the fourth annual Western New England College Downes Athletic Hall of Fame on September 21, 2002, during Homecoming Weekend. He is the first lacrosse player in school history to join the elite group. Former WNEC coach Joel Castleman presented Black into the Hall. A native of Ridgefield, Connecticut, Black ranks fourth on the school's all-time scoring list with 152 points (99 goals, 53 assists). As a junior, he set school records for points in a season (54) and goals in a game (eight vs. Nichols College). Black, an attackman, was a four-time Pilgrim League All-Star and an All-New England performer his senior year. He served as a team captain of the 1987 squad that captured the league tournament title and was a New England East-West Senior All-Star Game selection. A three-time team MVP, Black earned his bachelor science degree in management. He resides in Simsbury, Connecticut with his wife Heidi and their three children, Hunter (7), Craig (6), and Charlie (2). Western New England College's Athletic Hall of Fame is named in honor of former professor and present men's golf coach William Arthur (Red) Downes who was among the inaugural group inducted in 1999. The Class of 2002 also featured Joy E. Clark Cunningham '95, women's basketball/soccer; Alan J. Fabian '89, baseball; Brian J. Solomon '84 and his brother Gary J. Klepacki also served as an assistant football coach at Springfield College last fall as the Pride set a school record with 11 wins against only two losses while winning the Freedom Football Conference and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Klepacki is a 1991 graduate of Southington High School where he was captain of the boys' lacrosse team, team MVP, and an All-State selection. He also was an All-Conference football performer. LOOKS FORWARD TO WINNING SEASON SPRINGFIELD, Mass. Will this be the year that Western New England College's men's lacrosse team breaks the elusive .500 barrier for the first time in three years? Head coach Tim O'Meara and his players think so. "We surprised a lot of people last year by being a team that can challenge the traditional powers," said O'Meara. "Ask any of our veterans if they were pleased with our 6-9 record, regardless of strength of schedule, and the answer is a resounding no." Western New England started the 2000 campaign with five straight losses to nationally-ranked teams, but improved throughout the spring with an 8-7 win over traditional power Amherst College among the highlights. WNEC also gave NCAA Division III Tournament participant (and Pilgrim League champion) Springfield College all it could handle before dropping a 17-13 decision. "That game was the start of what promises to be an exciting crosstown rivalry," said O'Meara. The Golden Bears return their top three scorers, junior attackman Bill Locher (Yorktown, NY), 52 points (38 goals, 14 assists); sophomore attackman Ryan Deane (Wilbraham, MA), 39 points (27-12), and junior midfielder Kevin Savage (West Hartford, CT), 28 points (16-12). Two freshmen to watch are attackman Zack Miner (South Salem, NY) and midfielder Marco Le Gette (Severna Park, MD). Sophomore Tim Cinque (Lynbrook, NY) and junior Will Neuenhaus (Ridgewood, NJ) will handle the draws. O'Meara has a strong defensive unit with four-year starters Matt Musumeci (Mahopac, NY), Gianleo Duca (Waltham, MA), and James Wojtowitz (Johnson City, NY) leading the way. Defensive midfielder Matt Sordill (Short Hills, NJ) and defenseman Matt Maier (Roslyn Heights, NY) are promising freshmen. Senior Jared Barringer (Troy, NY) returns for his fourth season as the starting goalie. He compiled a 64.1 save percentage last year. "Health and consistency will be among the keys to our success this season," says O'Meara who is in his fifth year as head coach. "We're ready to turn the corner. and scratch and claw our way to a tournament berth in May." Western New England opens its 2001 season at 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. The Golden Bears will head south during spring break for games against Greensboro College (N.C.) on March 14 and Lynchburg College (Va.) on March 17. Western New England makes its home debut at noon Saturday, March 24, against Pilgrim League rival Wheaton College. BUSY
AND PRODUCTIVE 2000 FALL SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Nov. 10, 2000) Western New England College enjoyed a busy and productive 2000 fall season, according to head coach Tim O'Meara. After six weeks of practice and conditioning, the Golden Bears ended the non-traditional part of their schedule by participating in a round-robin tournament at Renessaler Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, on October 15. WNEC played Herkimer Community College in the first of three 50-minute contests and gave the junior college power all they handle before bowing by the score of 10-6. The Golden Bears easily dispatched Utice College in the second game that gave several freshmen an opportunity to see action. Western New England then defeated Division I Albany State in the final contest, highlighted by a goal by freshman defenseman Dan Gildart (Cheverus, ME). "We still have a ton of work to do, but I'm pleased with the overall performance of the squad," said O'Meara. "This is the toughest, most hard-nosed group that I've ever coached. We are physically very strong and athletic, and it showed on the field." Balanced scoring and team defense were among the keys to the team's successful fall season. O'Meara also was pleased with the work of his three goalies, senior Jared Barringer (Troy, NY), junior Matt Fogarty (Norwell, MA), and sophomore Pat Dabrowski (Baltimore, MD) who dominated their opponents in and out of the cage. "We gelled on both ends of the field," added O'Meara. "We need to carry this attitude into our off-season to be successful this spring. I can't wait to get started again." GOLDEN BEARS JUST MISS CONFERENCE PLAYOFFS At first glance, the team's 6-9 record in 2000 doesn't look too good. Looking a little deeper the Golden Bears had a respectable record considering the strength of the schedule. Of the nine losses, five of them were to teams ranked in the top 25 in the nation in Division III this season. The Golden Bears finished the year on a down note, however, losing the final two games of the season and missing out on a Pilgrim League playoff slot. WNEC held the lead late at MIT, but the Engineers put on a late spurt and beat the Golden Bears 10-9. In the season finale, Pilgrim League rival Babson College blitzed WNEC 12-4. Sophomore BILL LOCHER (Yorktown, NY) followed up an impressive rookie campaign with a better second year. He led the team in scoring with 38 goals and 14 assists. Sophomore RYAN DEANE (Wilbraham, MA) finished second with 27 goals and 12 assists, followed by KEVIN SAVAGE (W. Hartford, CT) with 16 goals and 12 assists. Junior goalie JARED BARRINGER (Troy, NY) was ranked third in the Pilgrim League in save percentage (.641). Savage, a midfielder, and sophomore KEVIN STURMER (Longwood, NY), a defender, were named to the Pilgrim League Southeast Division All-Star Team. |
