MIKE THEULEN SET TO MAKE GOLDEN BEARS' COACHING DEBUT AT MUHLENBERG TOURNAMENT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — There will be a new look when the Western New England College men's basketball team opens its season against Marymount University (Va.) at 3:00 p.m. Friday, November 19 in an opening round game of the Scotty Wood Tournament hosted by Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Athletics director Mike Theulen takes over as the head coach of the Golden Bears replacing Doug Pearson who retired last spring after 100 wins and two Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) titles in six seasons.

"There are many questions entering the upcoming season," said Theulen who compiled a 136-83 record (61.4%) in eight seasons as the head coach at Springfield College (1990-98).

"We are a very young team with only one full-time returning starter. We bring back only two players who averaged more than 20 minutes a game last season. Add that to the fact we have a new style of play, it may take a while for us to make our mark in the conference," he stated.

Western New England College lost starting guard Gerry Toney (9.6 scoring average) who graduated as the school's all-time three-point scoring leader (171) along with center Mike McFarlane (8.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg) who was one of the most improved players on the team last year. Toney also was the squad's best defensive player.

The Golden Bears have one of the best players in the region in junior guard Jon Godbout (Bristol, CT) who led the team in scoring (12.0) and assists (102) last year while shooting 46.6 per cent from the field and 72.0 per cent from the foul line.

Injuries took their toll on several players a year ago, including senior forward Anthony Charbatji (Attleboro, MA) who averaged 11.0 points in 21 games (18 starts) despite a foot injury.

Sophomore forward Jim Bayne (Bristol, CT) (foot) played only two minutes in one contest while senior point guard Jeremy Stenstein (Ithaca, NY) (shoulder) missed the entire season.

All three are healthy and ready to bounce back for successful seasons.

WNEC has another solid player in senior center Mike Cutler (Amherst, MA) who averaged 5.7 points and 5.0 rebounds in 23 contests (12 starts) in his first year with the team after transferring in from SUNY New Paltz.

Also pushing for more playing time are junior guard Matt Gigliello (Monroe Township, NJ) and sophomore forward/centers Malik Champlain (Norwich, CT) and Deon Thomas (Albany, NY).

Junior forward/guard Jason Cardinal (Ashaway, RI) rejoins the team after not playing the last two years.

Four promising freshmen will make their collegiate debuts, guards Asif Abdul-Wadud (Springfield, MA) and Ryan Hernandez (Hampton Bays, NY), and forwards Riley Houk (Morrisonville, NY) and Tristan Young (Waterbury, CT).

"We will stress defense, rebounding, and ball-handling until we can develop our offensive identity and rhythm," said Theulen. "There is a considerable amount of raw talent, so we have to define our roles and put the pieces together."

Also making a return appearance to the coaching sideline is former Golden Bears' head coach Bill Downes who will serve in an assistant role. Downes won 100 games in nine seasons from 1977-86.

CHRIS AGOGLIA AND BILL DOWNES NAMED ASSISTANT COACHES

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.Chris Agoglia and Bill Downes will serve as assistant men's basketball coaches at Western New England College this season, head coach Mike Theulen announced Wednesday (Oct. 20).

Agoglia, a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Management from Springfield College in 1998 and Master of Science degree in Physical Education from SC in 2000.

He was a four-year starter and a team captain his final season as the Pride advanced to the Sweet Sixteen in 1998 for the first time in school history.

Agoglia also played in the New England Basketball Coaches Association (NEBCA) All-Star Game his senior season. He ranks sixth on the all-time Springfield College list in three pointers made (120) and attempted (361).

Downes was a member of the Western New England College coaching staff and faculty for 31 years. He joins the Golden Bears' basketball staff at the invitation of Theulen who took over as head coach this past May.

Downes compiled 182 victories as the men's soccer coach (1970-89) and 100 as the men's basketball coach (1977-86). He also coached the baseball squad for three seasons (1971-73). Although he officially retired in 1999, Downes has coached the men's golf squad for the past 17 years.

The Western New England College Downes Athletic Hall of Fame was named in his honor and he was a member of the inaugural class in 1999.

Downes earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education at Springfield College in 1963 and Master of Business Administration degree at Western New England College in 1983.

DOUG PEARSON STEPS DOWN AS MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH TO BECOME COORDINATOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION & MEN'S TENNIS COACH

Athletics director Michael Theulen named men's basketball coach

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College president Dr. Anthony S. Caprio announced May 17 that Doug Pearson will become the new coordinator of physical education and men's tennis coach.

Dr. Caprio also announced that Mike Theulen will succeed Pearson as men's basketball coach while continuing as the school's director of athletics.

In another coaching change, men and women's tennis coach Jennifer Kolins will become one of the College's new CHAMPS/Life Skill Coordinators with assistant director of athletics Cynthia Costanzo. Kolins will continue as the women's tennis coach.

Pearson led the Golden Bears to a 100-60 record (62.5%) in six years, including two appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament. He inherited a program that had a losing record for eight straight seasons and quickly turned the Golden Bears into a winner with a 14-11 mark in 1998-99 that was the institution's most wins in nine years.

Pearson guided the Golden Bears to back-to-back 20-win seasons and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament titles in 2000 and 2001. He led his teams to five consecutive winning seasons from 1998-2003. The Golden Bears posted a 12-14 record this past winter after losing two 1,000-point scorers (forward Kris Hebert and guard Mike O'Connor) from the previous season. Pearson has the highest winningest percentage (62.5%) in men's basketball at the College.

For the past three seasons, Pearson has served as the chairman of the GNAC Men's Basketball Committee. He was the 2000 GNAC Coach-of-the-Year.

Pearson, a native of Manchester, CT, has an overall record of 291-189 (60.6%) in 21 years as a head basketball coach on the high school and college levels. During that time, his teams won seven conference championships.

In addition to his success on the court, Pearson and his teams have been active in numerous community projects, including Habitat for Humanity, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Dream to Read program, and Coaches vs. Cancer clinics.

Prior to joining the Western New England College staff, Pearson spent eight years as an assistant and associate coach at Springfield College under Theulen, who was the head basketball coach there at the time.

Pearson also served as the coordinator of physical education for the Manchester (CT) Public School system for 15 years.

"This was a tough decision to make after coaching basketball as an assistant and head coach for 32 years," said Pearson. "I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching at Western New England College and look forward to my new duties."

Theulen, now completing his sixth year as Director of Athletics, enjoyed tremendous success as the men and women's basketball coach at Springfield College.

The Keene, NH native coached the women's basketball team at Springfield College from 1983-86, compiling a 41-33 record. He was selected the Northeast-10 Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1984, after his team finished with a 20-5 record.

Theulen was named assistant men's basketball coach in 1986 at Springfield College, and served in that role for four seasons. He took over the struggling program as head coach in 1990, and within three years, had restored Springfield College as one of the region's top programs. Springfield College compiled five straight winning seasons, including Theulen's last three years where the Pride won over 20 games. SC posted a 26-2 record in 1997-98 Ñ the best mark ever in the school's 89-year history — and participated in its third straight NCAA New England Regional Championship. Theulen's men's coaching record was 132-83 for a 61.4 winning percentage.

Theulen graduated from Keene State College in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. He was a standout basketball player for the Owls and played for his father, Glenn. Theulen received a Master of Science degree in physical education administration from the University of South Dakota in 1981, and a doctorate in physical education at Springfield College in 1983.

"I'm very happy about returning to coaching," said Theulen who is the past chairman of the NCAA Division III Northeast Basketball Selection Committee. "Doug did a great job building our basketball program into one of the best in the region and with his experience in physical education, he will supervise the growth of this important area. Doug also will oversee one of our most successful programs, men's tennis, and will be counted on to continue the team's regional ascent."

Kolins posted a 40-18 record (69.0 winning percentage) as men's tennis coach the past four seasons, including an 8-8 mark this spring. Her teams captured GNAC Tournament titles in 2002 and 2003. Kolins was named the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year in 2002 and 2003. For the past year, Kolins has served as the athletics department Community Outreach Coordinator.

When Western New England College became a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) CHAMPS/Life Skills institution this spring, Kolins took on the added responsibility as a program coordinator with Costanzo. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program supports efforts of student-athletes toward intellectual development and graduation, encourages the development of leadership skills, promotes respect for diversity, encourages a commitment for community service, and prepares student-athletes for life after graduation.

"We are all very excited about the potential impact of our CHAMPS/Life Skills Program," said Theulen. "Having such talented professionals on our staff made these changes necessary as our athletics program continues to grow."
