Western
New England College Gerry Martin will begin his 14th season as head coach of the Western New England College football team in 2004. With several returning veterans and a promising group of newcomers, Martin and his staff are anxious to get the Blue and Gold back over the .500 mark for the first time since 1998. Last year WNEC posted a 2-7 record after dropping three contests by a total of nine points. The Golden Bears were one of the most improved teams in the conference despite the record, especially after compiling a 1-8 mark in 2002. The
personable and highly-regarded Martin is the longest tenured coach in
the program's 34-year history. WNEC posted a 3-5 record in 2001, winning its final three contests after scoring 121 points, including a school record 57-point performance against Framingham State College. Despite a 4-5 record in 2000, Western New England College was in contention for the NEFC Boyd Division title the first half of the season. The Golden Bears lost three games by a total of 10 points, but established a school record for total offense with 2,748 yards. In 1997 and 1998, he guided Western New England College to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in school history with records of 4-3 and 5-4, respectively. Martin is a 1991 graduate of the University of Connecticut where he played defensive end. He took over as the Golden Bears' coach just two weeks prior to the start of the 1991 season. Martin also has been responsible for several team activities in the local community. Each fall he coordinates a project where several team members rake leaves on two Sunday afternoons for neighborhood families. Martin, his staff, and players also hosted a pair of clinics for the Springfield CYO Panthers. In the spring of 2001 he supervised the Golden Bears' trip to the Shriners Hospital in Springfield where team members spent an afternoon with young burn patients. Martin previously served as an assistant coach at Minnechaug Regional in Wilbraham, Agawam, East Longmeadow, and Cathedral High Schools. A well-known figure in the community, Martin comes from a large Springfield sports family. He and his four brothers were all college athletes who went on to coaching careers. Mike Martin played basketball at North Adams State and is the director of athletics in the City of Springfield, Buddy played basketball at Dartmouth College, and Paul played football at Boston College, while Robby was a standout quarterback at Holy Cross. Martin lives in Springfield with his wife, Lori, and their three sons, Tommy (16), Andrew (14), and Gerald (4). |
