SHANNON PIZZINGRILLI OF WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE NAMED TO CoSIDA ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA FIRST TEAM

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College women's lacrosse co-captain Shannon Pizzingrilli received many awards during her career, but none better than the one she picked-up Thursday (June 17).

Pizzingrill was among 15 student-athletes selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Women's College Division At-Large First Team.

She is only the second person in school history to make the national academic squad twice since former basketball standout Roma St. George accomplished the feat in 1981-82. Pizzingrilli also joins former women's lacrosse captain Laura Sturgis (2001) on the first-team honor squad.

Pizzingrilli earned her Bachelor of Science degree in business administration (finance) last month, graduating with a cumulative 3.92 grade-point-average. She received the Wall Street Journal Achievement Award at Commencement.

On the field, Pizzingrilli established herself as the best player in the program's brief six-year history. She became the school' first women's lacrosse performer to gain All-American recognition (womenslacrosse.com Division III All-America Third Team) and play in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division III North-South All-Star Game.

Pizzingrilli, a center, was the Western New England College Coca-Cola Female Athlete-of-the-Year, the school's Female Senior Scholar Athlete-of-the-Year, and the team MVP for the third straight season.

The East Rochester, New York native also was voted the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Offensive Player-of-the-Year for the second time in three years and named the NEWLA Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Year for the third consecutive season. She was selected to the All-NEWLA First Team for the third time.

Pizzingrilli led the Golden Bears in scoring with 96 points (53 goals, 43 assists) this spring. She is the school's all-time leading scorer with 275 points (164 goals, 111 assists) in three seasons.

Western New England College posted a 14-4 record that was the second highest win total in school history. The Golden Bears captured the NEWLA Tournament title and participated in the NCAA Division III Championship for the second time in three years.

JASON CONNELLY AND CHRIS MAHONEY HEAD LIST OF WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE BASEBALL AWARD WINNERS

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — It's a good thing that Jason Connelly (Scituate, MA) doesn't believe in the sophomore jinx because the second-year pitcher/second baseman was among the top players on the Western New England College baseball team this spring.

WNEC finished the season with a 33-14 record that was a school record for wins, breaking the old mark of 29 set in 2002. The Golden Bears also placed third at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament and captured their second Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament title in four years.

Connelly, a right-hander, posted a 9-3 record and 2.76 ERA in 97.2 innings in gaining the WNEC Cy Young Award. The nine victories tied as the second highest in school history. Connelly also had nine complete games and one shutout while hitting .277 in 44 games.

Connelly was named both the GNAC Pitcher-of-the-Year and GNAC Tournament MVP. He was named to the All-GNAC First Team, GNAC Tournament Team, and NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament Team. Connelly earned a spot on the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III All-Star Second Team.

Junior leftfielder Chris Mahoney (Yorkville, NY) also made quite an impression in his first year this spring. A transfer from Division I Siena College, Mahoney led the Golden Bears in hitting (.412), hits (61), homers (7), total bases (106), on-base percentage (.477), and slugging percentage (.716). He tied for the team lead in RBI (39) and triples (6). Mahoney also was tied for second on the team in runs (44) and was second in doubles (12).

Mahoney ended the season with an impressive school record 31-game hitting streak. His 61 hits was another school mark, breaking the old mark of 57 set by junior centerfielder Jeff Maurutis last year. (Maurutis had 60 hits this season.) Mahoney batted .458 in six games (11-for-24) at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament and .357 in four contests (5-for-14) at the NCAA Division III New England Regional Tournament.

Not bad for a person who didn't get a hit in 11 games over two seasons as a part-time player at Siena.

Mahoney was named to the NEIBA Division III All-Star Team First Team, the All-GNAC First Team, and the GNAC All-Tournament squad. He also was the recipient of the WNEC Silver Slugger Award.

Freshman first baseman Tom Horgan (Westfield, MA) had a great rookie season finishing second on the team with a .371 average in gaining All-GNAC Second Team recognition.

Junior centerfielder Jeff Maurutis (Yorkville, NY) hit .330 and made both the All-GNAC Second Team and GNAC All-Tournament Team. Maurutis, who had 60 hits this season, became the school's all-time hit leader (153). He also had 24 stolen bases (in 26 attempts).

Junior catcher Matt Hackney (Bristol, CT) made the NEIBA Division III Second Team and All-GNAC First Team after hitting .324 with 17 stolen bases. He also was selected to the GNAC Tournament Team.

Junior shortstop Justin McGee (Wilbraham, MA) hit .314 and was the recipient of the WNEC 10th Player Award.

Junior pitcher Ryan Macdonald (Milford, CT) also enjoyed a fine season with a 7-3 record and 1.97 ERA in 68.2 innings. He was a high school teammate of Jeff Maurutis at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, Connecticut.

Matt LaBranche (Windham, NH) was selected the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year. He won his 100th career game against Daniel Webster and now has a 124-76 record (62.0%) in five seasons.

Western New England College established a school record with 104 stolen bases in 124 attempts. The Golden Bears averaged 7.47 runs a game and had a .312 team batting average. The pitching staff had a 3.74 earned-run-average with 22 complete games along with 271 strikeouts and only 90 walks in 372.2 innings. WNEC also had a respectable .958 fielding percentage and 44 double plays.

JUNIOR JACKIE SHEDLOCK SELECTED AS THE GNAC PITCHER-OF-THE-YEAR; LORI MAYHEW TOP GNAC COACH

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — For two years Western New England College junior Jackie Shedlock (Oak Ridge, NJ) was the backup to superstar Marcie Bruder who graduated last year as the top pitcher in school history.

This spring Shedlock enjoyed her own record-breaking season by compiling a 20-6 record and 0.94 earned-run-average in being selected the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Pitcher-of-the-Year.

With Shedlock helping to lead the way, WNEC posted a 33-11 record and captured its third consecutive GNAC Tournament title while appearing in the NCAA Division III Championship for the third straight season.

Shedlock was the catalyst establishing a school single season record with 210 strikeouts, breaking Bruder's old mark of 195. Shedlock also had a perfect 12-0 record and 0.11 ERA against GNAC rivals. Opponents hit only .163 against the crafty right-hander who had nine shutouts, including a five-inning no-hitter against Rivier College along with six one-hitters.

Shedlock, who didn't pitch an inning (she played first base) during her four years at Jefferson Township High School, has a 37-7 career record and 1.01 ERA with 337 strikeouts in 257.1 innings.

For her efforts, Shedlock also was named to the NCAA Division III Northeast Region All-Star First Team and New England Intercollegiate Softball Coaches Association (NESICA) Division III All-Star Second Team. She was the MVP of the GNAC Tournament, an All-GNAC First Team honoree, and the WNEC Most Valuable Player.

Sophomore first baseman Erin Whitcomb (Bellows Falls, VT) led the Golden Bears in hitting (.387), hits (48), doubles (17), triples (6), homers (5), total bases (92), and slugging percentage (.742). She made only three errors in 196 chances (.985). Whitcomb was selected to the NCAA Division III Northeast Region All-Star First Team and NESICA Division III All-Star Second Team. In addition, she made the All-GNAC First Team and was voted the WNEC Best Offensive Player.

Junior catcher/tri-captain Michelle Boss (Fremont, NH) was the only player to start all 44 games, finishing second in hitting (.385). She earned a spot on the NCAA Division III Northeast Region All-Star Second Team and received an honorable mention on the NESICA Division III All-Star squad. Boss also was an All-GNAC First Team selection and the recipient of the WNEC Golden Bear Leadership Award.

Senior third baseman/tri-captain Becky McHugh (Ballston Spa, NY) capped her career in fine fashion by finishing third in hitting (.363). She made the NCAA Division III Northeast Region All-Star Third Team.

Sophomore Kristy Kehoss (Cheshire, CT) hit .357 in her first season as the starting shortstop and led the Golden Bears with 42 runs and 17 walks. Sophomore leftfielder Jen Piorkowski (Trumbull, CT) had a solid season with a .342 batting average in gaining a spot on the NCAA Division III Northeast Region All-Star Third Team.

Junior pitcher Holly Coutinho (New Bedford, MA) was a key contributor to the team's success posting an 11-5 record and 1.86 ERA with 62 strikeouts in 86.2 innings. Coutinho had won only five games the previous two seasons.

Also hitting over .300 were freshman designated player Stephanie Gildart (Portland, ME) (.322) and junior second baseman Sarah Moisao (Harwinton, CT) (.306). Junior centerfielder Tricia Troiano (Stewart Manor, NY) hit .295 and made several nice defensive plays during the season.

Kehoss (history) and Whitcomb (sport management) were selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) District 1 College Division Softball Academic Team.

Lori Mayhew (Westfield, MA) was selected the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year after guiding the Golden Bears to their third straight 30-win season, third consecutive GNAC Tournament title, and third appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship. Mayhew, a member of the WNEC Downes Athletic Hall of Fame, has a 179-95-1 record (65.3%) in eight seasons.

Marco Le Gette and Shannon Pizzingrilli invited to North-South All-Star Games

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — With the husband and wife coaching team of John and Aimee Klepacki leading the way, Western New England College's lacrosse programs enjoyed successful seasons again in 2004.

The men's lacrosse squad posted a 14-7 record that was a school record for wins, breaking the old mark of 12 set in 1996. The Golden Bears also captured their first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship and placed second in the Pilgrim League Tournament. John Klepacki's coaching record is 34-21 (64.2%) in three years.

The women's lacrosse team compiled a 14-4 mark for the second highest win total in school history. The Golden Bears also captured the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) Tournament title and participated in their second NCAA Division III Championship in three years. Aimee Klepacki's coaching record is 60-46 (56.6%) in five seasons.

John (a native of Southington, Conn.) and Aimee (a native of New City, N.Y.) met while attending Springfield College. John was a standout player on the men's lacrosse team while Aimee was among the top performers on the school's lacrosse and swimming squads. They both graduated from Springfield College in 1996.

At WNEC, John also is an instructor in physical education while Aimee is the director of aquatics. Their busy schedules became even more hectic last August when daughter Peyton was born. The Klepacki's are expecting their second child in October.

"Western New England College has given us the opportunity to have flexible schedules so we can be there for our student-athletes and also have time to be together as a family," said John Klepacki who was named the 2004 Pilgrim League Co-Coach-of-the-Year.

Both coaches were extremely happy when many of their players received post-season awards.

Two individuals, senior captains Marco Le Gette (Severna Park, MD) and Shannon Pizzingrilli (East Rochester, NY), will make school history in June when they become the first players in their respective program's history to play in the prestigious North-South All-Star Games.

Le Gette will play in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III All-Star Game on June 12 at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York. DOUG PEARSON STEPS DOWN AS MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH TO BECOME COORDINATOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION & MEN'S TENNIS COACH

Athletics director Michael Theulen named men's basketball coach and Jennifer Kolins assumes new role of CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Western New England College president Dr. Anthony S. Caprio has announced that Doug Pearson will become the new coordinator of physical education and men's tennis coach.

Dr. Caprio also announced that Mike Theulen will succeed Pearson as men's basketball coach while continuing as the school's director of athletics.

In another coaching change, men and women's tennis coach Jennifer Kolins will become one of the College's new CHAMPS/Life Skill Coordinators with assistant director of athletics Cynthia Costanzo. Kolins will continue as the women's tennis coach.

Pearson led the Golden Bears to a 100-60 record (62.5%) in six years, including two appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament. He inherited a program that had a losing record for eight straight seasons and quickly turned the Golden Bears into a winner with a 14-11 mark in 1998-99 that was the institution's most wins in nine years.

Pearson guided the Golden Bears to back-to-back 20-win seasons and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament titles in 2000 and 2001. He led his teams to five consecutive winning seasons from 1998-2003. The Golden Bears posted a 12-14 record this past winter after losing two 1,000-point scorers (forward Kris Hebert and guard Mike O'Connor) from the previous season. Pearson has the highest winningest percentage (62.5%) in men's basketball at the College.

For the past three seasons, Pearson has served as the chairman of the GNAC Men's Basketball Committee. He was the 2000 GNAC Coach-of-the-Year.

Pearson, a native of Manchester, CT, has an overall record of 291-189 (60.6%) in 21 years as a head basketball coach on the high school and college levels. During that time, his teams won seven conference championships.

In addition to his success on the court, Pearson and his teams have been active in numerous community projects, including Habitat for Humanity, the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Dream to Read program, and Coaches vs. Cancer clinics.

Prior to joining the Western New England College staff, Pearson spent eight years as an assistant and associate coach at Springfield College under Theulen, who was the head basketball coach there at the time.

Pearson also served as the coordinator of physical education for the Manchester (CT) Public School system for 15 years.

"This was a tough decision to make after coaching basketball as an assistant and head coach for 32 years," said Pearson. "I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching at Western New England College and look forward to my new duties."

Theulen, now completing his sixth year as Director of Athletics, enjoyed tremendous success as the men and women's basketball coach at Springfield College.

The Keene, NH native coached the women's basketball team at Springfield College from 1983-86, compiling a 41-33 record. He was selected the Northeast-10 Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1984, after his team finished with a 20-5 record.

Theulen was named assistant men's basketball coach in 1986 at Springfield College, and served in that role for four seasons. He took over the struggling program as head coach in 1990, and within three years, had restored Springfield College as one of the region's top programs. Springfield College compiled five straight winning seasons, including Theulen's last three years where the Pride won over 20 games. SC posted a 26-2 record in 1997-98 Ñ the best mark ever in the school's 89-year history — and participated in its third straight NCAA New England Regional Championship. Theulen's men's coaching record was 132-83 for a 61.4 winning percentage.

Theulen graduated from Keene State College in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. He was a standout basketball player for the Owls and played for his father, Glenn. Theulen received a Master of Science degree in physical education administration from the University of South Dakota in 1981, and a doctorate in physical education at Springfield College in 1983.

"I'm very happy about returning to coaching," said Theulen who is the past chairman of the NCAA Division III Northeast Basketball Selection Committee. "Doug did a great job building our basketball program into one of the best in the region and with his experience in physical education, he will supervise the growth of this important area. Doug also will oversee one of our most successful programs, men's tennis, and will be counted on to continue the team's regional ascent."

Kolins posted a 40-18 record (69.0 winning percentage) as men's tennis coach the past four seasons, including an 8-8 mark this spring. Her teams captured GNAC Tournament titles in 2002 and 2003. Kolins was named the GNAC Coach-of-the-Year in 2002 and 2003. For the past year, Kolins has served as the athletics department Community Outreach Coordinator.

When Western New England College became a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) CHAMPS/Life Skills institution this spring, Kolins took on the added responsibility as a program coordinator with Costanzo. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program supports efforts of student-athletes toward intellectual development and graduation, encourages the development of leadership skills, promotes respect for diversity, encourages a commitment for community service, and prepares student-athletes for life after graduation.

"We are all very excited about the potential impact of our CHAMPS/Life Skills Program," said Theulen. "Having such talented professionals on our staff made these changes necessary as our athletics program continues to grow."

NCAA SELECTS WESTERN NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE AS A CHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS INSTITUTION

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 26, 2004) — The National Collegiate Athletic Association has recognized Western New England College as a CHAMPS Life Skills Program institution. The College is among approximately 90 (out of 700) Division III athletics programs that will sponsor this program that challenges athlete's minds for personal success while focusing on values and commitments. Only 14 Division III schools were accepted into the program in 2004.

The five commitment areas of CHAMPS Life Skills are Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Personal Development, Career Development and Commitment to Service.

Since Mike Theulen became athletics director six years ago, the department has made a renewed commitment to enhancing the quality of the student athlete experience. CHAMPS Life Skills will create the framework as the department moves forward with this mission.

The CHAMPS Life Skills Program will support efforts of every student athlete toward intellectual development and graduation, encourage the development of leadership skills, promote respect for diversity, encourage a commitment to service throughout the community, and prepare student athletes for life after college.

CHAMPS Life Skills also will address many of the initiatives of the College's strategic plan.

Western New England College assistant director of athletics Cyndi Costanzo and men and women's tennis coach Jennifer Kolins will serve as the CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinators. Both individuals attended a four-day orientation session hosted by the NCAA in Long Beach, California in February.

Costanzo and Kolins networked with Divisions I, II and III institutions, and attended a series of workshops intended to prepare them to implement CHAMPS Life Skills on our campus. A key component to this training was identifying the extensive resources available through the NCAA. It became clear to Costanzo and Kolins that implementing a successful program are possible because of the exceptional resources already available at the College.

The CHAMPS Life Skills program is beginning to take shape due to the strong cooperation between all departments on campus.

Western New England College president Dr. Anthony S. Caprio has endorsed CHAMPS Life Skills and the entire athletic staff is committed and excited to implement the program during the inaugural kick off in the fall of 2004.

At present student athletes are in the process of completing a needs assessment questionnaire that will be used to set specific goals and objectives for the 2004-2005 academic year. Initial programs will include a speaker series, resume workshops, CHAMPS newsletter, and the development of a resource library.

"We are extremely proud to have been chosen as an NCAA CHAMPS Life Skills institution," said Theulen. "The five commitment areas within the program directly reflect the ideals set forth by our athletic department mission statement. Our entire coaching staff is motivated and energized by this opportunity.

"The CHAMPS Life Skills program will allow our department to play a vital role not only in the lives of our student-athletes, but also have a positive impact on the College's student body," he noted.

CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Mission Statement — The NCAA is committed to a comprehensive program of life skills that provides educational experience and services in order to develop well-balanced lifestyles for student-athletes; to encourage growth in decision-making, planning and fulfillment of career and life goals; and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting.

Western New England College Athletics Department Mission Statement — The Western New England College athletics department is committed to enhancing the overall development of its students and student athletes through competent instruction and appropriate role modeling by our coaching staff. Lessons learned in the competitive environment of intercollegiate athletics and the responsibility of team membership must be applied in the present, but most importantly, are used to prepare the student athlete for life after college.

The popular Leaman was even being considered to serve as the school's interim director of athletics before Theulen took the position in 1998.

"Jack was a great coach and an even better person," said Theulen. "He loved the student-athletes at UMass and was a strong supporter of all the local colleges. Jack had an effervescent smile that reflected his outgoing personality; he will be greatly missed by a lot of people."

Theulen recalled the first time he met Leaman as a graduate assistant men's basketball coach at Springfield College in 1981.

"He never forgot me," Theulen stated. "Every time I saw him afterwards he always took the time to say hello. His advice was always valued. Look in the dictionary under the word 'Coach' and you see his picture. Jack was indeed a special person."
