Healthful Living Center
The
123,000-square-foot Alumni Healthful Living Center (AHLC) offers students
a place to enrich their campus experiences beyond the classroom.
The facility,
which opened in 1993, features a 2000-seat basketball facility, fitness
center, aerobics room, eight-lane pool and recreation area, indoor
track, racquetball and squash courts, practice courts, and a wrestling
room.
Western
New England College's Downes Athletic Hall of Fame and Health Services
are located in the building.
The Alumni
Healthful Living Center will be the site of the Basketball Hall of
Fame High School Invitational from January 17-18, 2003.
The Springfield
Spirit of the National Women's Basketball League (WNBL) again will
use the facility as a home site during its second season this winter.
The AHLC
also will be the site of the 2003 Great Northeast Athletic Conference
(GNAC) Men's and Women's Basketball Championships. The tournament
semifinals will be held on Friday, February 28 followed by the championship
games on Saturday, March 1.
Golden
Bears Stadium
Golden
Bears Stadium, which opened in September 2002, is the College's newest
facility. The lighted multi-purpose field is part of the Suprenant
Field complex and is located adjacent to the baseball and soccer fields.
It will
be used by the College's varsity field hockey, football, and men's
and women's lacrosse teams, and for the school's intramural program.
Western
New England College's football and lacrosse teams previously played
their contests on the game field located near the St. Germain Campus
Center. The College is building a new residence hall on the site.
The field hockey team played its events on a grass surface at Suprenant
Field.
"This
new multi-purpose athletic field is a giant step in fulfilling our
vision for athletics, and it is an opportunity for us to further our
support for our students and propel both our athletics program and
the College to its next level of excellence," said Western New England
College president Dr. Anthony S. Caprio.
"The
entire College has worked together to advance varsity and intramural
sports because we recognize how beneficial these are for our students
and for the growing reputation of Western New England College,"
he noted.
According
to athletic director Mike Theulen, "This facility will be a
tremendous asset for our student-athletes and teams, and will complement
our Alumni Healthful Living Center. It also allows us to deliver programming
in a qualitative way for our student-athletes and student body."
Suprenant
Fields
The Suprenant
fields are the practice turf for all outdoor sports. There includes
wide, green spaces and a baseball/softball diamond. Home baseball
and softball games are held here. Many
fans and opponents say that our athletic fields are among the best
in New England.
