This
is the Intramural Sports Handbook for the 2000-2001 academic year.
We encourage every member of the college community to participate
in some form of intramural or recreational activity. Your participation

INJURIES AND LIABILITY
Participation in the intramural sports program is completely voluntary.
Each individual assumes the risk for any harm or injuries caused by
negligence or intentional acts. The Athletic Department and Intramural
Staff are not responsible for injuries occurred. We recommend that
all participants have adequate personal accident insurance. Any injuries
incurred during intramural competition must be reported to the official
or supervisor of that activity.
WESTERN
NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE INTRAMURAL GUIDELINES
THERE MUST BE AT LEAST FOUR TEAMS COMMITTED TO SCHEDULE A TOURNAMENT.
All full time undergraduates, faculty, and staff are eligible to participate
in intramurals except in the following cases:
** Members of a particular varsity or junior varsity may not compete
in a corresponding sport in the intramural program.
** Any student who is a member of a varsity of junior varsity team
as of the first intramural contest is ineligible.
** All varsity and junior varsity members must obtain consent from
respective coaches to play an intramural sport during their season.
A team found to be using ineligible players shall forfeit all games
in which the offense was committed.
Any questions regarding eligibility should be brought to the Coordinator
of Intramural Sports.
Only those players listed on the roster are eligible to play.
A protest concerning interpretation of the playing rules or eligibility
rules is permissible. An eligibility protest may be made at the time
to the intramural official on duty. A protest concerning playing rules
must be registered to the official on duty at the time it occurs,
after which play must resume. A formal written protest must be filed
with the Coordinator of Intramural Sports within 24 hours after the
contest in question. The Coordinator of Intramural Sports shall have
the final ruling on all protests.
FORFEITS
1. If a team is not present and ready to play 10 minutes after the
scheduled starting time a forfeit will be declared.
2. In order to claim a forfeit, the opposing team must have the minimum
number required to start a game present and ready to play.
3. If a team forfeits (2) contests during a sport season, it will
be dropped from further competition in that sport. All teams scheduled
to play that team will receive a victory, unless another team is added.
4. Forfeits for ineligible players or unsportsmanlike conduct will
result in the same penalties outlined above, with the possibility
of additional penalties for flagrant offenses.
5. Members of a team which has forfeited out are not eligible to participate
for another team.
6. Failure to meet an officiating assignment is also registered as
a forfeit for your team, but is not reflected in the team win-loss
record.
INTRAMURAL CAPTAINS
1. Keep the name, address, phone number and E-mail address updated
at the Intramural Office.
2. See that rosters are submitted on time.
3. Know playing and eligibility rules and enforce them.
4. Notify all team members regarding place, time and date of contests.
5. Represent team at all meetings, or send a designated team member
in your place.
6. Maintain a high standard of sportsmanship for the team.
7. Cooperate fully with the Coordinator of Intramural Sports on all
matters pertaining to the successful operation of the program.
8. Pick up awards for the team when they are earned.
SPORTSMANSHIP
Good sportsmanship is vital to every contest. Officials, supervisors,
and administrative personnel shall make decisions on whether to warn,
penalize, or eject players or teams for poor sportsmanship. The following
may be considered as evidence of unsportsmanlike conduct:
* Profanity
* Unnecessary delay of game
* Arguing with official concerning decisions (Discussion is allowed
only by the team captain.)
* Derogatory and abusive remarks toward an official or opponent.
* Any action that shows disregard for the rules or policies of the
Intramural Department.
SPORTSMANSHIP RATING
The
sportsmanship rating will be used in addition to win-loss record to
determine eligibility for participation in the playoffs. Each official
will give each team a sportsmanship rating at the conclusion of every
contest. The sportsmanship rating will be recorded on the score sheet.
A TEAM MUST MAINTAIN A SPORTSMANSHIP RATING OF A 3.0 OR HIGHER TO
QUALIFY FOR THE PLAYOFFS - REGARDLESS OF WIN-LOSS RECORD.
RATING SCALE: The rating scale ranges from 1.0 to 5.0. A rating of
1.0 is indicative of POOR sportsmanship, a rating of 5.0 is indicative
of SUPERIOR sportsmanship.
**A sportsmanship rating of 3.0 will be used as the standard score
given for GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP. A written comment must be included by
the official when a rating other than 3.0 is given.
OFFICIATING CREW RATINGS
The officiating crew ratings will be used by the intramural staff
to ensure a high quality of officiating at all intramural contests.
Each team captain will rate the ENTIRE officiating crew after every
game in which their team participates. The officiating crew ratings
will be recorded on a separate form and returned to the Coordinator
of Intramural Sports.
The "comments" section should be used to clarify the rating, to highlight
a specific incident or to commend specific intramural staff member(s).
The team captain may be contacted to provide more detailed information
and/or to clarify any comments submitted with the officiating cerw
rating form.
RATING CATEGORIES: The officials will be rated in two categories,
"Knowledge of the Rules" and "Game Managment". When rating "Game Management"
consider the following: rule enforcement, signs of bias, working as
a unit, preparing the field/cout for play ahead of time, etc...
RATING SCALE: The rating scale ranges from 1.0 to 5.0. A rating of
1.0 is indicative of POOR performance, a rating of 5.0 is indicative
of SUPERIOR performance.
**A rating of 3.0 will be used as the standard score given for "ADEQUATE"
performance. Written comments, that clarify the ratings given, are
encouraged.
TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL CONDUCT
A. Team violations
1. Intramural probation places a team on a
probationary status which would cause a suspension from intramural
participation for further unsportsmanlike conduct. The term of probation
may be set for a particular sport, a semester, a year, or an indefinite
period.
2. Suspension from intramurals prohibits the
suspended organization and itŐs individuals listed on the team roster
from participating in any team sport during the period of intramural
probation designated by the Coordinator of Intramurals.
B Individual Violations
The disciplinary measures that may be taken
in the case of an individual unsportsmanlike conduct include the measures
listed above for a team. However, in the case of suspension of an
individual, he/ she may not participate in any activity, whether it
be a team or individual sport. Any action taken against and individual
does not preclude the right of the Coordinator of Intramurals to take
actions against the organization which he/ she represents for the
same incident.
PLAYER/TEAM EJECTION AND SUSPENSION
Violation: Abusive conduct toward an official
or opponent resulting in ejection from the game.
Penalty: Any player ejected from an intramural
contest for unsportsmanlike conduct or flagrant abuse of an opponent
or official, is automatically suspended from the next game his/ her
team plays. The person is also subject to further disciplinary action
by the Coordinator of Intramurals. Automatic suspension from all intramural
activities for one (1) full calendar year is possible, depending on
the severity of the action. The team captain is responsible for the
actions of the team. The team and organization it represents will
be held responsible for the conduct if players at all times before,
during, and after the contest.
PROTESTS
1. All protests must be filed by the team captain at the time question
occurs.
2. A protest may be filed concerning rules interpretation, policies
or procedures.
3. Protests may be settled at the game site by the Intramural supervisor
on duty. 4. If a team captain believes the decision rendered to be
in error, he/ she must inform the official or supervisor that the
game will continue "under protest".
5. A written protest must be submitted to the Coordinator of Intramural
Sports within 24 hours of the incident.
6. A protest concerning player eligibility can be made before, during,
or after a contest.
a.) If a question is raised before a contest,
the player and captain will be notified and given the choice of whether
or not the player will play.
b.) If the player plays and is found to be
ineligible, the contest will be forfeited and that player suspended
for at least the remainder of that sportsŐ season.
c.) If the question is raised during the
contest, and the player learns at that time it is raised, the contest
will continue. The contest and the player will be subject to review
by the Coordinator of Intramural Sports.
d.) Eligibility questions after a contest
will be investigated by the Intramural Office.
